I put the Porsche pulley on the Nissan alternator, Yes I used a dremmel with cut off wheel to cut a keyway.. and had to cut the lip off the front of the new alternator housing... put them side by side, and used a cutting wheel on the grinder to do the modifications to the new alternator... was easy as pie!

having 2 mounts, and 2 dead alternators made it easy!

Belt is DEAD on straight, and tomorrow I will receive the shorter belt, it was out of stock, but I paid for it... just have to swing by and pick it up tomorrow!

All in all, I'm happy... until something else breaks...

The old belt was tight enough... with no load other than the engine running and the battery charging!

EXCELLENT!

The mounts must be a little bit different from car to car. I had to grind off a LOT more than that.

I believe the mounts are the same (at least my 2 are carbon copies of each other, same part numbers, came off an 87 Turbo and 88 NA)... PET only lists one part number, so they should all be interchangeable... but the alternators have huge variations from what I gather.. and I am sure that Nissan mounted the alternator using an adjustable slide mount.. so variations in the parts could be accommodated for... where as our cars... yeah not so much!

IIRC someone posted them as 14lbs (quest) vs 18lbs (Porsche).. not a huge weight savings, but I can tell you even loaded this new alternator is much more tolerant of lower belt tension then the original ones.. (takes less power to turn it, even at higher loads (lights, stereo, heat on).)

What alternator did you go with? (Brand, and where did you buy it). I'm going to have to get my nissan alternator back in.....but I'm not going to use the AutoZone Duracrap one again....

yes they did, tension was adjusted with a screw that threaded through a bolt that attached to the alternator lol

id say that weight difference is about right. it is 130amp so it should run easier

Thanks Spencer, but I don't think that's the route I want to take.

I'm just going to go buy another one...hopefully of better quality than the one I got from AutoZone lol.

I'd just like to know which brands seem to fit our cars better, because I had to modify the case of mine a lot more than Joka had to.

IMO it could be worthwhile to get the boneyard one and have it remade. i am doing this with a 100amp nippondenso alternator off a volvo, it's dead but it can be rebuilt to 130amp no problem by a local shop for about $150, about $100 for a standard rebuild.

look for the nippondenso though, they may try to sell an american brand for the mercury version of the van

ANyone have any measurements for teh overall case diameter compared to stock? I'm wondering if I can do this, go with a 3" inlet on my turbo, and keep my AC on my street car.

Yes, as there have been some that have done it and are running 4 inch inlets... IMHO it is at leat 2 inches smaller, could be more... I didn't measure but the comparison is palpable!
