i have tried a few times but the drive shaft makes it just about impossible. Its extremely easy to just lower it down and slide it out the side.... especially when you are doing it all yourself
also heres some more prep pics from today.
one last pic of this sticker before its gone forever

Hey Brett, If you REALLY want to clean up the engine bay for about $150 do a Battery relocation to the hatch area, you can delete the ENTIRE harness tha goes across the firewall. Attached is a pic of my engine bay, If you have any questions just PM me. Oh yeah.. Engine looks GREAT

see now thats what im looking for. I planned on moving the battery. so thats why i wanted to make the battery tray area look as good as possible. there was some rust i had to grind off.
and yeah i plan on getting rid of all the wiring harness on the firewall and running it somewhere else
thanks for the picture. thats the first 944 ive seen thats anything close to what ive been imagining in my head this whole time.
this is what im kind of shooting for... nothing in the bay except an engine. nice and simple

Brett,
That is exactly the mentaility I am taking with my LS swap, I know the swap has been done before, but I want mine to be the CLEANEST of them all...
Regarding the harness delete, what i did was run 3 wires from the rear P.S. Cubby through the rear quarter, then if you pull the vent that you see when you open the passenger door, and look inside down towards the rocker you will see a hole that passes into the rocker/frame its self, pass the wire through there, then pull the carpet away from the opposite side of that frame rail/rocker up by the DME and you will see a painted over rubber plug, pull it out and fish your wires through. I made a slight modification to the DME bracket so i could run my wires under it. I ran 3 wires 1 4 gauge ExCelene welding cable for my starter lead, its the same stuff IceShark used for his kits, VERY good quality stuff. And i used 2 6 gauge Wires to feed the 6 wires that used to run across the firewall. I pulled the 6 wires that used to go into the engine bay back through the firewall and spliced them into the twin 6 gauge wires. you could use a single 8 gauge.
Another thing i did to clean the engine bay was to relocate the vacuum canister to the back airbox bracket. Just one less thing running through the firewall.

heres something my buddy mike did. he got rid of the classic VW bubble res and replaced it with a nice aluminum res that he mounted to the firewall just above the air filter
