Default Got a set of BBS's - Need Refinishing - Pics

I picked up a set of BBS's tonight. Good shape no chips all look straight but someone was working on refinishing them. The current state of them is the lips are all sanded down and the center section of them would need to be repainted. So how would you guys go about refinishing these? Keep sanding the lip with a higher and higher grit? And what should I use to paint the centers - what paint would look closest to the BBS gold?

Any ideas would be great, Ill get some pics up asap!

Indeed you need to post pics. There is no easy, fast way to go about refinishing wheels. The cheapest, simplest way is to just go with sandpaper from grit to grit to about 1500 or 2000. Depends how shiny you want them. I find scotch brite works real well to bring a nice satin finish.

If I were doing it I would blast the entire wheel and have the centers powder coated. They make high temp masking tape that some powder coaters have. Powder coat > paint. After powder coating I would then polish the lips or go satin on them or whatever you like. Or you can do it the other way around.

To make polishing the lips easier, get an old electric motor and rig it up to spin the wheels. It's well worth the time of making the contraption. The finished product is so much better.

I say you sell them and buy the ones I have for sale that are in perfect shape. No refinishing needed. They will fit your car since you have 84. They are in the For Sale section.

Wow pics are a little big, sorry. Couldnt really get the light to show but the center gold section is flaking a little but they are all good shape just need the lip polished and centers painted.

And I dont really want a set, I was going to buy them to flip them but when I bought them he didnt say anything about them being half sanded. But oh well, a little work never killed anyone one. Plus gold rims on yellow car is kinda gross.

Get aircraft paint stripper and get rid of the clearcoat and paint. Spray it on and take it to the car wash late at night and pressure wash it off. Or just use a pressure washer if you have one.

See how they look after the paint/clear is off and go from there. It shouldnt take much as far as sanding goes.

Again, if you can get them spinning that would be deluxe...

Looks like one of the rims was replaced at one point.

im going to be polishing the lips on mine soon; i had them sent out to be refurbished a few years ago but the brake dust has really gotten through the clearcoat on the polished aluminum part and now looks really crappy. ill be rigging up a lathe setup on a custom hub in order to spin them maybe 60rpm with high grit.

Yeah the rim that is black is in the best shape, it must have been purchased as a replacement.

I think when I go to sand them ill just jack up the back of my car put them on, and let the car do the work..

wasn't going to say anything, other than suggesting a black or gunmetal center would look good on your car...

True. But that would look best on my car, I would do a funky color but nothing goes with yellow unfortunatly.

Dark blue and yellow looks real good.

Gunmetal is a little on the safer side.
