OFFICIAL 944 S3 Registry Thread
With all the folks putting 968 engines in 944's, etc...let's start a registry. Please provide the following:
1. Base Car info (year, model, etc)
2. Car info (interior / exterior color, etc)
3. Options on original car?
4. What year 968 engine
5. Mods
6. A brief explanation of why and how long it took, challenges you faced, etc.
Let's keep track of the folks out there doing this. It may be of a great help to those who are interested in doing the same swap.
Thanks!

The Story:
For years I have wanted to build my own toy. After selling my last 996, I decided to just do it. Found a high mileage donor and began work in July of 2008. This has been a labor of love, with a twist of throwing tools and swearing. It has not been easy. But seems to be completely worth it. The goal for the car was originally to be a 944 S2 Spec car. But after finding a cheap 968 motor, and my wife becoming pregnant with our second child, the car is now a dedicated weekend track toy. My intention is to get certified as an instructor and teach fellow enthusiasts to enjoy their Porsches.
cheers,
Chad

1. Base car - 1983 944
2. Indishrot (India/Guards Red)
3. Aprox 160K
4. Manual steering, Manual Sunroof, Rear wiper delete, Basically barebones 944.
5. 1995 968 motor with 75K miles, 5k since rebuild
6. Mods:
Engine:
Custom intake
Lindsey Ultra Mounts
Fresh bottom up rebuild 5K ago
Drivetrain:
S2 Flywheel
S2 clutch/damper
1989 944 S transaxle
Brakes
Rennbay Big brake kit
Everything else (exhaust, suspension, etc, interor) is stock minus speaker/wiring upgrade and a new deck, and some tequipment floor mats... Still running the stock cookie cutters until I source me some spacers to run my 16" c2s.
The story
One sunny day cruising along lakeshore, give the car a blip and remark at how responsive and great the 2.5L slug felt. 3 minutes later my rubber centre disintergrates and leaves me stranded. The next year was spent sourcing parts and getting everything ready for the transplant.
Problems? Making the late engine wiring harness work in an Early car, figuring out the routing (since the late harness should route to the passenger side, and the early harness runs through the driver)
Other than that and the fact that I had to remove both shims on the Lindsey mounts for the intake to clear, everything was smooth as silk.

hi, here's the #1 S3 in Finland
1. Base Car info : Stock '91 S2
2. Car info : Traditional Red / black interior
3. Options on original car: M474
4. What year 968 engine: '92 80tkm
5. Mods : engine ; none. Car: 951S shocks and struts, 951S brakes, TechArt exhaust
6. Story : The S2 engine broke aparts for reasons yet unknown. The project scheduled for 2months but it tooks more than 6m as there were lots of changes in my non-Porsche life . The tricks to get this working were:
- S2 flywheel
- S2 referensce sensor stand
- 968 reference sensor
- Short circuiting ignitor control module
- Pin #7 (in passanger footwell) connected to +12V

I have an '85.5 944 that is a track car for DE's and TT's.
I have a lead to buy a low mileage 968 engine.
I am looking for pre-build advice from anyone who can help.
I can get the engine with the torque tube, but not the transaxle. My transaxle already has a Guard Transmission LSD in it. The current car setup is to PCA and NASA 944spec class, full cage, race seats, 6 pt. harness, etc. The engine swap would change classes, but I am ready for more power and don't want to install a complete turbo setup.
So, will the 968 torque tube hook to my transaxle? or do I need to try to find an S2 bellhousing to mate my my current torque tube to the 968 engine?
What about electronics and wiring harnesses?

I did the swap in my 86 and used the 968 torque tube to mate up to a 944S tranny w/LSD, so that does work. I made a thin metal gasket to go between the torque tube housing and tranny to keep dirt and water out. I put in a 951 radiator which required the lower radiator support from a 951 and a plug to block off an unused outlet.
As for wiring, you use the 968 harness and computer with a few wiring mods that you can find if you search the list, mainly a 12V continuous source to a couple pins and running the tach output to the 4 pin connector in your existing harness. I installed a late model dash cluster with the engine warning light and wired that in too.

2. Guards red/black interior
3. Not many
4. '95, '94, '95 and yes I'm on my third engine
5. Too many to list.
6. Original build took a bit over a month, it's been an ongoing project since then. Currently on the rack to get solid bushings throughout.

1. Base car - 1989 944 S2
2. Color- Red on Linin
3. Original chassis miles: 109K
3. Options - Limited Slip trans, non-M030
4. Engine info - 1993 968 motor with approx 60K miles

- replaced clutch slave / master, & lines
- New half shafts / CV's
Suspension:
- Koni's
Interior / Safety:
Stock but the next for work
Exterior:

I took the easy way out and let the shop do the install. This car is the first that I let anyone do my work, work took up to much of my time. Had heavy scoring on the cylinders and the cost was about the same and the added power was needed. I will be looking at some more power this winter.

I know this thread hasn't seen much action in a few years but in my stable I've been busy working on.........
1. Base Car info (year, model, etc) 87 944 turbo all original 137xxx
2. Car info (interior / exterior color, etc) black on black/greige
3. Options on original car? All options except heated seats and factory rear wiper (added switch and motor from donor car)
4. What year 968 engine when this rebuilt 2.5 I just spent all summer rebuilding goes then I'm shooting for a decked out 3.+liter to fill the engine bay! At that point maybe even a bigger turbo!
5. Mods rebuilding The car soup to nuts, vdo gauges, 968 rear bumper, Lindsay racing silicone hoses, custom "test"pipe
6. A brief explanation of why and how long it took, challenges you faced, etc. so far been working on this car for a year, have always loved the 944, this 87 turbo is my second one, but I've never really cared for the back of the car, too 70's VW-Volvo looking for my taste, but the 968, have always loved the look of that rear!
Thanks
