Got back from Germany
Hey,
just rolled off the ferry this morning. Lovely trip! We had a few problems with the car but no showstoppers... first the pressure signal hose to CBV worked loose and the leak effectively capped boost to 0.6 bar (took quite some time to find that small hose ), then later on a small coolant hose from the electric water pump to the turbocharger broke in half and gave a nice spray of coolant right to the turbo -> lots of smoke!! After that no major issues.
I'll try to get some pics scanned but it'll take a while.
Short review:
1) visited Nürburgring, managed to do a few laps... with 0.6bar boost, but it was awesome never the less. What a track!!
2) saw a few fancy museums, the technology museum in Sinsheim is very impressive. They had a race GT1 and few 959s on display, for example...
3) Zuffenhausen factory tour, Porsche museum, Weissach test track, Exclusive & Restoration departments... a lot to see for sure! Got a few rides around the test track, new cars driven by factory test engineers - very fast, and also much fun.
4) Back to Nürburgring to see the F1 race. Nice until Kimi had that engine failure...
I had to keep buying new t-shirts all the time since I hadn't really prepared for such temperatures... graphite car, no sunroof and no air conditioning, bucket seats, 30+ C and sunshine all the time...
Couldn't top 240km/h on the autobahn, had quite a bit of vibration when we went past 220km/h and then it just didn't pull like it should... I have no clue what's wrong with the car at the moment, but it's running *very* rich, and also boosting later than it used to ... weird. Oil consumption was enormous, about 4 liters for 2350km trip, and the bastard is still losing some coolant even though that one hose was replaced... hmm... but it's just something I have to work out..

Oh yeah, who was it that I met at the Nürburgring? You had that diesel focus and I couldn't drive because that of that coolant thing... I'm really bad with names so I forgot already, sorry!!
Michael - got your e-mail, too bad we couldn't meet but maybe later, esp. if you happen to journey up here some time

Hey Sami!
sounds like you had a blast in spite of your slight problems. I'm sure a lot of us Americans dream of such a trip!! I know I do.
Thanks for sharing. Any pics? I hope you get the "bugs" worked out of your 951 soon. I bet you will!

Welcome back, Sami! While you were gone, the clutch crapped out in my S2, so don't feel too bad about your "minor" issues .
Sounds like you had a wonderful trip. 240 km/h isn't bad at all! What kind of oil are you using? These cars drink synthetic like it's lemonade. Maybe you could try semi?

Luis, I've got Mobil 1 5w50 so that just might be the reason... driving all day at somewhat high speeds in 30+ c weather really heated the oil up! ~2 bar oil pressure on idle, ~4 bar when cruising... only went up to 5 when I punched it.
LP, yep, I took a bunch of pics but they're all on old-fashioned film at the moment and it'll take a while for me to get them scanned... I'm hoping to get pics also from the other finnish guys who participated on the trip. Patience please!!

Sami,
Sounds like a great trip. Thanks for sharing, and hope you get your car issues worked out quickly and inexpensively.
I love making trips like that. At a previous company I worked at, we had clinical investigation sites (medical) in Ferrera and Modena, Italy. Needless to say, when we had one free day between cases, my first priority was getting to the Galleria Ferrari in Maranello. Not only was the facility tour just fantastic, but my company's in-country rep had an additional surprise. We left the Galleria, drove to this small overpass on the highway and parked the car at the side of the road. Turned out that this had a nice view of the Ferrari test track, and that Michael Schumacher was testing the new F1 car prior to crating it up and shipping it to the first race in Australia (this would have been in... 1997 I think).
Anyway, to bring this back "on topic", I have to say that I have been a Schumacher fan ever since, and it did not break my heart when Kimi's engine blew. Needless to say, I was not so happy after Montoya's pass, but thats another story...
Looking forward to seeing the pics.

I suppose you know Kimi is a finn??
Italians are strange people. They have some F1 drivers, but they do not support them! They just support car, no matter who is driving that Ferrari. Are you also supporting Ferrari or are you a tru Schumacher fan?
Ok you have to pick somebody, because there's no F1 driver from the USA....

Hi Olli,
Off Topic, but what is the status of the darn Swedes on the clear blinker and front sidemarker lenses? I think you said they would get their act together around 4th of July.
I've got a headlight harness set aside for you for "currency exchange" but if this is going to drag out until next year what should we do? Just sell you one and incur all the exchange fees? I've started a new build list for the next harness run because I think I'm sold out if the orders follow through. But you have one.
I'm still driving around with plastic cooking wrap taped on one lens since that jerk here seems to have lost one lens for good. Doesn't look too fine.

Dan,
as i wrote to you earlier Pete is handling this -"Finn-Group" lense deal with Joakim. Pete is just now somewhere in France with his family & 951, so i am not able to check out where we go at the moment. I'll let you know as soon as i got some additional information.

Olli,
I certainly meant no offense to Sami or anyone else when I make the comment about Kimi. If it was offensive to anyone, then I sincerely apologize. I am amazed at the skills of Kimi, and I would not be at all surprised if he took the title this year. All that, and he is something like 23 years old!
I just got caught up in all of the wildness which is Italy in my first few trips over there. That combined with my tour of the Galleria and watching Schuey practice - I just began to root for him and Ferrari from that point on (I had previously been a Damon Hill fan). My distributor in Italy was also an F1 fan, and lived near Imola. He knew the track doctor who was working the race when Senna died (and he told me to not believe what I might have read regarding the accident, but would not go into further detail). I guess that all of this just got my juices flowing and I have enjoyed watching Schumacher win ever since.
You are certainly correct when you speak of Italy and the Italian people, but what fun I had there. Some of my fondest memories while on business travel. I will always remember my feelings when driving on the Italian roads: To me it seems like traffic signs, signals, lane markers, etc. are much less law or regulation in Italy, but merely "suggestions". What fun.
In conclusion - "Go Kimi"!! If Schuey can't win it, I'll root for Kimi.

Olli,
With a family in the 951? I hope the kids are under 3 foot tall for those damn back seats.
Just checking since I have begun to run out of parts, ordering new ones, getting ready for our Nation's Birthday that comes in two days. A 3 1/2 day vacation to fish, play with the kids and make sure they don't blow off a finger with a firecracker, etc.

yup, I was also on the same trip with Sami and Co..
Well, I took the plane to Stuttgart from Helsinki.
Got to say, it was truly amazing to be treated like VIP in Zuffenhausen.
We saw 7 959 next to each other just waiting' to be serviced.
We were truly amazed!
I took the plane from Frankfurt back to Finland, so I needed to get somehow from Stuttgart to Frankfurt. Well there was bunch of us with Porsches, but unfortunately all the front seats were taken.
So Sami kindly offered to take me to Frankfurt,
in his 951 back seat !!
Well, I'm 1m87cm tall, and there really is not AC or moon roof in his car, so it was, how would I put it, something special, like extremely fast sauna..
But I got there, thanks to Sami.
I'll show you some pics soon..
