Post does anyone make a high output alternator for our cars?

it doesn't have to be bolt on cause i don't mind doing a little fab work to get it to mount up. i am looking for something that's of a higher capacity than my stock one. i'm having a problem keeping my battery charged and i'm not quite sure what it is yet. if it ends up being a bad alternator (as opposed to something draining the battery) then i'd like to replace with something better. i've got an audio amplifier that draws around 35 amps and i want to make sure it's not a problem. i'm looking for something that can put out at least 150amps

Andrew, 35 amps draw for the stereo isn't too bad. Wait until you get your new battery cables and adjustable voltage regulator in and see how things go on the voltage & battery front.

You can get your 115 amp alternator rebuilt to put out about 145 amps. Someone here on Rennlist had that done, I forget who, but the outfit that was doing it is here in my town. I believe it was under $300. After that, it is off to something like a Delco that can throw off 200 amps. They have been installed but the cases are pretty big and it is a lot of work to get them to fit correctly.

actually, my math was off a bit. it's 45 amps that the amp is drawing. perhaps i should have my alternator rebuilt by those guys. is that a common service or is it just this one place?

Andrew,
Check out a web site called "the battery shack" I think it is, it's in Islamorada Fl, down here in the keys. He builds real good hi output alternators that work, I know I got a 100 A job from him for my boat. Try recharging 2 banks of golf cart batteries in short order after couple days on anchor, takes a bit. He has all different case styles and will put what ever kind of pully on for you too. Good product and stands behind them. His 100 A unit will usually outperform many after market alternators rated at 150 A or more.
Good Luck,
Bill

It is fairly common with other alternators, I'm not so sure about these Bosches. I believe this guy in town stopped doing it a while ago because it wasn't worth his time.

And I'm not sure how long they will last goosed up so you need to keep that in mind when you jump in. You are getting a souped up alt, better expect shorter life. You know, most of our 15 to 20 year old cars still have the original alternator in, which is pretty amazing.

In any event, install the battery cable kit and new voltage regulator. See how things go.

Bill, Islamorada?! I anchored in that Gulf side bay that is only about 6 foot deep across the road from the Holiday Isle for over a month. Hard coral marl bottom. Man was it a bitch to get an anchor to set for a 10 ton boat. Ended up tieing up to an engine block that someone dropped in the drink.

I know the area very well Ice, I rode out Hurricane Andrew anchored in that area, but thats another story. Yea a real bitch to get the hook to hold most everywhere bayside down in the keys. Just a big coral flat parking lot covered with water.
Later,
Bill

Bill, If you rode out Andrew there, then you probably know the hurricane holes in the mangrove quite well. Good place to sit for a blow but you sure wind up with a lot of critters on board afterwards.

replace tranny with turbo s
rebuild current tranny and sell it off
clutch
flywheel
motor mounts
install new wiring kit
suspension (maybe a bit down the road when i get some money)

Another thing to remember is that the alternator will only output as much current as needed. If you're only drawing 500-watts, the alternator will only be putting out about 40-amps regardless if it's a 115-amp or a 145-amp unit. What's the voltage output on your current alternator? Perhaps you could use the adjustable VRM so you can keep the output around 14v.
