stuck oil filter?

ok, tried to take off the oil filter and it's utterly stuck. it even broke my strap wrench i just bought!!:grr: so ive rammed screwdrivers through it, ugh.. any ideas on how to get it off? the top of it looks like tissue paper now...

there is a tool that is essentially a large socket designed to fit over oil filters and you use your ratchet/extension with. You could buy/borrow it from some where, but since you have already mutilated your oil filter in maybe too late.

yeah :/ it was either the strap wrench or that... hmm i might have to tear the sheet metal down to the socket..

Sometimes I use big channel-lock / tongue and groove pliers when I'm taking the filter off.
Maybe try to grab it at the base with the pliers.

I don't see how ramming a screwdriver all the way through it still won't get it off. Unless, of course, you need a bigger screwdriver.

damn, I just hand tighten mine and it comes off by hand . people go nuts sometimes though and tighten things way too tight. i remember once on another car I had to use a pipe for leverage to open the drain plug someone had tightened it to a million foot pounds.

Those suck big time, I have one.

The absolute best ones are the metal ones with two or three spring loaded claws, break the filters loose everytime.

They look like this, some variations.

When you put the next one on, make sure you oil the threads and rubber seal before hand tightening.

They dont suck if the filter isnt over torqued.

this has only happened to me one time on the 1st oil change after buying the 1st 944.

i held it with big channel locks and my son put a big screw driver thru the handle and needed both hands to turn the channel locks.

the screwdriver in the side won't work if it was overtightened by more than using hands.

it looks like the bosstool doesn't get far enuff down on the sides, even from the backside.

I find the cap type filter "wrench" to be the best, plus clearance-wise its the best... Plus they are $5 at advanced auto parts. Just ask them to look up the filter to a 944 and test fit the cap wrenches to see which one fits. I know i'd never change oil without it again, its too handy

i bought what krystar has, i just bent the damn thing... they look like a pair of bananas now, this thing is insane! never seen a freaking oil filter this tight! even the drain plug was overtightened.... i have no clue anymore

krystar 11-19-2008 07:29 PM

lol did they impact wrench the filter on?
