Default Oil is like religion to some people...

I went to get some stuff for my car today at the local advance.
I see that a friend of mine (who drives an 84 944) now works there. He bought his car about 3-4 years ago for $8K and it had 60K miles on it.

Anyway...
We get to talking about my engine trouble, and transmission swap.. and I end up asking him what oil he is using in his 944. He tells me that he uses conventional 10W30 (Even in the summer). I try not to gasp, and we keep talking as I continue to buy a few things.

We get to the register and I tell him I'm going to run over and grab some oil. And I come back with 6Qts of 20W50 Valvoline VR1. Then he looks up at me with a smirk on his face. "What is this?? Like, racing oil?"
I was pretty friggin angry now, because he was giving me crap like I'm some idiot you buys whatever looks the coolest.
But, I keep my cool, and tell him that is what a lot of guys are using in their 944's. He then proceeds to tell me how much better 10W30 oil is, and how much better it feels to drive it like that.

I couldn't convince him to switch, and it felt like I was telling racist jokes at an NAACP meeting. I didn't want to make him feel stupid....

IDK... Just thought I would share the story. I hope he decides to sell it as a parts car when he spins his #2 bearing. Not that I would wish harm to the car.

I just don't know how it lasted 4 years running 10W30 conventional oil every summer. And I know for a fact this kid got a ticket for doing a burnout in front of his church.

It makes me angry he hasn't had to do any maintenance on his car, that he treats like crap. And I treat mine like a darn princess, and all it does it break all the time...

*Sigh.....* oh well...

Enhance your calm, citizen. Oil is like religion and politics. I don't talk about oil, religion, or politics with anyone, because we all have our opinions already, and there's no convincing anyone. Just cast your vote, say your prayer, or buy your quart in privacy!

10w30 isn't so bad for a low mileage engine. It's all about oil pressure and if he gets decent pressure with 10w30 even in the summer, then I guess it's alright. IMO!

Maybe because 10W30 isn't as criminal as you think?

Really, if you keep the oil topped off, change it every 3K miles... I bet you won't find much difference between 0W40, 10W30, and 20W50. In fact, the lighter weight oils are going to lubricate the top end of your engine quicker upon start up, which is when you experience the most damage due to starvation (unless you are HARD cornering).

There are pluses and minus to any oil you chose. Ultimately I bet they all work pretty well...

Obviously, he has made a deal with the devil. The evidence you have presented can leave no doubt about this.

The heavier oils are fine....and I agree, politics, religion, and oil shouldn't be discussed....BUT...

I'd be carefull with racing oil as they don't contain detergents to keep your engine clean. Racing engines are made to be rebuilt often, so dirt, slime, and acid isn't a problem.

Use any oil you want, just as long as its not racing oil.

You beat me too it. The whole cold and hot viscosity changes. I read a great artical, actually I think I got the link off this forum, about oil weights and temp changes. I kinda changed my perspective on the whole oil thing.

V2- I don't know how you have kept your car running that long on penzoil.

like i said, fresh engine. all bearings, seals, rings, bolts, nuts, pulleys everything have less than 20000 miles on them. i finished the build in april 2006.

every oil change (every 2000-2500 miles or so) is with 7(!) fresh quarts of pennzoil 20W-50. runs like a champ, no (undetectable if any) oil burning (well except that time that some diesel got mixed with my gasoline :-X), no smoke, no milkshake, no major oil leaks (a drop here or there)

youve got to consider that when these engines were designed and built there was no synthetic oil (at least to the public, if any). the bearing surfaces etc were designed for mineral-type dinosaur oil.

If you take a look in your cars owners manual and look Engine Oil chapter you will see that 10W30 is in there. If you drive your car in normal traffic conditions use oil that suits temeprature range. Just keep the oil fresh. If you track your car and keep the revs up to the red line for longer periods you have to use something like 20W50 or 20W60 to keep oil pressure up. With really hot engine you cannot get the oil pressure to 5 bar mark when revving the engine eaven with "racing" oil (my experience).

SO, Im almost done with my build, NEw everything, What oil should I run??? I do beat on it hard at times and usually pull to redline alot, Before my Performance rebuild I ran 10-30 and even 0-40 with out many problems, But I did notice that on really hot days in traffic at idle oil pressure would drop way low, Like low enough to throw the warning light on LOL, SO I guess I will try 20-50 summer oil, ANy good brands you guys recommend

I bought Valvoline VR1 because I've been hearing that it is the only thing other than Redline that has suitable ZDDP.
