Post A/C Receiver/dryer

OK, where is this thing located? My A/C has been weak, last summer it was really a joke. I'm getting a rebuilt compresser, 134A and it is recommended that the receiver/dryer unit be changed out also owing to it's age (1988 924S)

Is there a proceedure to be on the new 944 garage?

Thanks in advance,

John

It is behind the drivers side headlight. A black cylinder with a round viewing glass on it and two lines entering and leaving.
Not too hard to change out, but you need to get all of the R-12 out of the system first. Are you doing the work yourself?
If so, you will need to replace the o-rings at the receiver drier as well as at the compressor. Then you will need to get the system under vacuum for a good 30-40 mins. Then you can start introducing the R-134 into the system.
If you need more details, let me know. I did this job recently.

Pete,

Please tell where you got the Drier, O-rings for Drier and Compressor. My last compressor died and I want to change to R-134a as well.

Also, any advice for working on our A/C systems would be great.

You also have orings at the TX valve. Most people doing conversions/service forget these cuz there out of sight. TX valve can be seen by removing the top of the HVAC blower assembly just under the windsheild.

Got the R/D at Eurowebparts. I vented the system, and then changed out the compressor and R/D. Both operations are pretty straightforward, although you really have to push the compressor into position. Then I got lucky and a local mech drew the vacuum and helped me put in the refrigerant.
You can buy a conversion kit at any auto parts store. It will come with a can of oil, and a few cans of R134. Also will have a hose and 134 fittings. The fittings in my kit only fit the LP side. You need to add the oil first, then you start adding the refrigerant. The system must be on, and eventually the compressor will start once there is enough refrigerant in the system.
