Arrow 944t died- wont start!!?

PLEASE HELP,,

I just got 944t like 3 months ago.. its my first car and I dont know
anything about engines. If ANYBODY can help me to narrow down the
possible problems so I can know whats wrong with it.

--I was driving down a hill when my car just turned off, it was night
and the stereo and lights were still on the engine just died (i didint
hear or feel anything it just died).

I pull over and I tried to turn her on, I can just hear the starter
winning but its not turning on. Also I noticed the oil gauge and
battery voltage marks all the way down but there is oil and the
battery is good.

I heard it can be the timming belt or the fuel pump.
WHAT CAN IT BE!!!?? what are some possibilites? Worst case scenario?

THANKS IN ADVANCE
this is my first car I AM A ROOKIE to the fullest I appriciate it,
86' 944t

RELAY Check your relays! I fried one that affected my blinkers. Do not be afraid of the car, just be patient. I suggest you do a search through the past threads, and see what you can come up with.

I just bought my car just a little over a week ago, and every time I turned off the headlights it turned off the engine. So I had to chase electrical gremlins.

Also go to www.clarks-garage.com

Talk to the others here, I seriously doubt it something's serious.

Do you have records of when the timing belt and waterpump were last changed? As a matter of record, I suggest to always change those (waterpump if needed; peek into the weephole, see if it has water dripping) plus the balance belt and alternator belt.

If your gauges are not reading then I really think it's a bad relay - those are the little box like things above the fuses.

Just go to the website I told you, and they will have a list of what is where; remove that relay and have it tested.

Also, check your wires going to the battery; mine had a short in the mainline, not the starter line, and had to be cut back 3" since it had corrosion.

So relax, and hunt through the posts and stuff. Do not panic, that does no good.

Fuel pump is in the trunk, under the carpet. Could be a relay to that, too. These engines are pretty reliable, so just hunt down the symptoms.

I do suggest you learn about your car here, there are so many wonderful people, and they helped me buy a car, and have been helping me to work on it!

So if a girl like me can work on her car, so can you! Best of luck, and keep in touch!

Dev what are you doing up so late.

Me I'm up because Our local streetsweeper decided to get an early start on the day outside my bedroom window.

Anyways it sounds like the DME relay. THough it could be coil/wires though with those it will usually run rough before hand. The relay can just die.

Worst case scenario. You lost a timing belt. But you would know that as well because while dying would be acompanied by a rather noisy racket when your piston and cylinders got into it together.

Sid, I do my best work at night, when no one bugs me! Ergo I'm a night person. Have one more page to work on tonight, then beddy by.

I forgot the name of that relay, but sure sounds like the DME relay then!

I think you can get some good prices on those, without having to pay retail. Just look around. But first pull it and test it.

"Sid, I do my best work at night"

And by work you mean answering questions on rennlist

To check the relay do a search on paper trick you should find my description on how to do it. Take you five minutes and you can fond out if that's it.

I had an intermittent starting problem. The first think I did was swap the Fuel pump relay, it also controls power to the DME control box. That wasn't it. Next I checked to see if I had spark while cranking. The DME control box controls Spark. I swapped out my DME with a known good one. The intermittent problem went away. Put back the original DME and the problem returned. I ordered a rebuilt DME. Installed rebuilt unit, no more problem.

What you mean late!? I work on a page or two, go for a walk, exercise, answer email, peek at Rennlist, etc. Repeat.

Hey all,
thanks for the advice i found the problem...it turned out to be a faulty pulley wich destroyed my timing belt. The funny thing is that when the car died I didint feel or hear anything.

Anyways I took off all stuff including that bad pulley so now i need to buy two belts and that pulley before I can take her out for a spin again.

I just hope I can put it back together OK its my first car and im a retard when it comes to engines.

Ill post up the results.
(if it works)

If you broke the CAM belt you could have bent a valve in the head..very common in the 944.

I would replace all the pullys, if one went the others could be next. Also, you need to align the CAM and flywheel marks before you install and tension the belts. You might want to do a compression test to see if any valves were damaged.

Good luck!

you wonder how can there still be people on the planet that don't seem to know about the belt/pully maintenance on these cars..

should do your front seals while you are in there..and how old is your water pump?

Well one of the pulleys was damaged, and one of belts ripped in half and another belt got like 1/4 of the teeth ripped of them.

As far as the valves beign bent I have no idea if they are, Ive been hearing its common for that to happen. How can I check that? Can I check it before adding the belts?

Also when this happend I was going down a hill when it just died. I didint hear of feel anything the car just died...when there is valve damage is there a noise or rough fealing in the car?
