Question Tie rod end assemblies

I have a 1988 944 and i'm replacing the tie rod assemblies since the inner tie rod ball joints are shot. along with this, i'm replacing the control arms as well. my question is; how do i get the tie rods off the power steering rack? can this be done with the rack installed in the car or does it have to get removed? I've read Clark's manual for tie rod replacement and it only is covered in the rack removal. if i can do it with the rack in the car, how do i get the 30mm nut off?

thanks

The rack can stay in the car. There are 32mm flats on the inner tie rod ends that you'll need to get a wrench on. Pull the boots off the rack and turn the steering wheel in the direction of the side you are working on until you can easily access the flat. The inner flage of the tie rod end might be punched in one spot to deform it into a slot on the steering rack (in case of undertorquing, this would keep it from loosening). Don't worrying about trying to tap the material out of the slot; it won't happen. Just use your wrench to turn it and the material will deform it's way out of the slot.
