I've owned this car since February 2007 and have spent thousands updating most of the maintenance items and getting it to a daily driver status and ability to handle track days. I am a PCA member here in KC for the past 4 years and have been working and playing with 944s for a long time - including building a Cup and 944 Spec car.

This car is not a neglected, poorly abused and ignored car. You will find most 944s as the first Porsche people could buy who shouldn't have b/c they can't afford or don't care to maintain them. If that is the case then they are ticking timebombs. As such I've spent thousands of dollars and over 100 hours working on this car. It drives like a dream, can keep up with many a "fast" car and deliver a smile to the driver and onlookers.

Maintenance:
Unfortunately I have no records prior to originally purchasing this car in St. Louis (CarFax was good - no accidents or flood damage) in February 2007 but have kept records of parts purchased for maintenance. Car was at one point in its life maintained by Plaza Motors in St. Louis. However, I've done most of the maintenance to this car but have had it over to Imagine Auto (local Porsche shop in Lenexa, KS - Karl knows this car so he can give you a more objective assessment) for much of the work. Below is a detailed list of items updated and repairs:
- Motor Mounts 3/2007
- Timing Belt & Waterpump Maintenance 6/2007
- Cam Chain / Tensioner Inspection (in good shape - did not change) 6/2007
- Broadfoot Racing Underdrive Pulleys 6/2007
- Tune Up (Cap / Rotor / Plugs / Clewett Engineering Wires) 6/2007
- Installed JVC CD/MP3 Player and Polk Audio Speakers 6/2007
- Valve Cover Gasket replaced - valve cover powder coated 6/2007
- Front Seals 6/2007
- Installed 996 Twists with New Tires 10/2007
- Installed FR Wilk Prototype Performance Chip 10/2007 (noticeable increase in power across then entire RPM range)
- All 4 Wheel Bearings 11/2007
- All new Zimmerman Rotors (cross drilled) with Mintex Performance Pads 11/2007
- New SS lines 1/2008
- Replaced Passenger Window Switch
- Installed Corbeau A4 Drivers Seat (will include stock linen drivers seat - bottom cushion is torn)
- Replaced Interior Door Panels w/ Good Condition Units with Black Map Pockets & Handles

There were very limited quantities of 944 S2s sold in the US from 1989 - 1991. Only 4k S2 Coupes were imported and many have disappeared. Even more rare is the optional color Baltic Blue with Linen Interior. I know of only 40 or so total S2s with this color combination.

I'm willing to have local Rennlist members check it out for you or have Imagine Auto provide a PPI.

Issues that I know will need addressing: torque tube makes some slight noise but I'm told that this can last for many years before it becomes an issue; rear main seal has a small leak, water pump has some very small weeping since it was changed in 2007; it has a Corbeau A4 drivers seat as the linen drivers seat is ripped and will need to be covered; I still have the D90 wheels with decent tires and can include them for $300; and the A/C turns on but does not blow cold air (maybe needs a recharge...I just never use A/C even on hot days as top off and windows down).

This car has been my daily driver for the past year and is a joy to drive. I'm not leaving the Porsche fold - have a 944 Spec car in build progress but looking to move up to a newer car such as a 996 or M3.

Do you have the mileage for the maintenance records?

jaje 05-04-2008 04:42 PM

I do not have the mileage written down but in the year I've owned the car I've only put on 5k miles. I'm lucky and work from home so don't drive all that much.

When I first bought the car I didn't drive it much at all until I got the major maintenance completed so I'd say the new pump / belts have only 4k miles since they were changed. As I got all those items under control I started enjoying the car more and more (mostly driven on very nice days and garaged all other times). For the nasty bad weather days I'll drive the truck.

Added to EvilBay but would prefer to sell to fellow Lister.

I've lowered my price to $7200.

Car will include all records, manuals, spare tire, drivers seat. For an extra $300 I will also include a set of 4 D90 original wheels in good condition with good tires still on them (for an extra set). The 996 Twists come with the car at the above price.

More information

A/C has been through a troubleshoot. It was converted prior to my purchase to R134a. We got it to work and it blew out 60 degree cold idling in the shop on a humid 80 degree day so when moving outside it'll get even colder. The low side schrader valve on the compressor was leaking and likely a good idea is to replace the drier too to get it to blow cold.

The coolant leak we wound up troubleshooting to the lower radiator hose clamp. It still holds but a mist is somehow escaping. It does not leak or leave puddles on the floor. Just leaves a coolant smell after driving. You can only smell it when you get out of the car and up front under the hood. A new coolant hose and clamp costs $20 to take care of.

I had a leakdown test performed by Imagine Auto and got the following results:
Cylinder #1: 175psi (5%)
Cylinder #2: 175psi (3%)
Cylinder #3: 175psi (3%)
Cylinder #4: 175psi (4%)
Cylinder #5&6: (just kidding)

If I was to keep the car for another year (contemplating it) I was going to do the clutch, RMS, replace the torque tube, and do the rod bearings and oil pan gasket as I have not completed these as of yet.

if you havent been able to sell yours in a month, then i think i am married with no chance of parole to my S2. so much for a 968 or a .....

Good luck with the sale.

LeMans71 06-11-2008 04:35 PM

jaje, nice looking car. Recently bought a "no record" '89 S2 myself, so I can appreciate what you have put into that car. Sorry you are parting with it, but I wish you luck with the sale.

Any chance you would consider parting with that set of D90s separate from the car & might be willing to ship to 83703? If so could you send me some photos and info about the tires?

Thanks,
Scott

Thanks Tom. I had my price higher and people are mainly looking for the "steal". I don't need to sell the car but if I get my lowest offer of $7,200 I'll sell it. If not then keep it, put some more work into the car to get it completely up to date on maintenance and enjoy the car for the time being.

Scott - I'll send you some higher res pics of the wheels (unfortunately they are out in my storage unit which is a good 20 miles away). I'd like $300 plus actual shipping (likely FedEx Home Delivery - cheapest I've found). I've included pics of the car after I bought it with the D90s on them.

That car is amazing and it sucks that it's not selling.
Too bad everyone is poor, and on top of that, depressed from the insane gas prices.

V2Rocket 06-11-2008 09:35 PM

i want itttt soo baddd :(

discount for letting you keep the corbeau for your spec car? :)

jaje 06-11-2008 09:39 PM

Calmchaos - well I get 25mpg in the S2 versus 13mpg in my 2500HD (I drive the truck in nasty weather or when it's just plain yucky out...it sits outside in the elements so I don't care much). Plus I'm tasked with soccer camp drop off for my son and two of his friends. They like arriving to practice in the Porsche more than the truck.

V2 - I'd only drop the price $100 if I could keep the Corbeau seat (that's all it's really worth anyway) and would reinstall the drivers seat.
