Ashtray Light

1997 993 ashtray light issue...
As is commonly done, when a low-power interior accessory light is desired, it can easily be piggy-backed off the ashtray light wiring to avoid altering an OEM harness.
So far so good. The accessory light powers on with all the other instrument lighting. In addition, a bypass (cut-off) switch was installed so that the accessory lighting could be manually turned off when the instrument/ashtray lighting is on. The problem is, when the bypass switch is activated to power off the accessory lighting, it shuts ALL the instrument lighting off even though the dash light switch is in the parking light position. Flipping the bypass switch back the other direction changes nothing. I have to literally turn off then on the main dash light switch to reset to normal operation.
Is the instrument light control unit receiving a false signal telling it the actual light switch is turned off? The "lights on" buzzer is still activated even though no lights are on which I realize is on a different circuit.
Has anyone experienced this or can tell what other modification is required here to correct this? Who is up for this electrical challenge? Thanks guys.

I hooked up an LED interior accessory light borrowing power off the ashtray light. Works fine except when I went to wire in a manual cut-off switch. It turns off "ALL" the lights including the instrument lights and the only way I get them back on (reset to normal) is to turn off and on again the light switch on the dash. This happens on a 1997 993.
Cause of this anomaly anyone?
