Boxster wheels, front bearing caps

Boxster wheels, front bearing caps
I got a set of Boxster wheels for my 87 NA, like everyone else the front wheels
won't go over the wheel bearing caps. So I started grinding the cap sides down, the top seperated from the sides, it just fell apart. I didn't even grind it down
far enough to fit through the wheel opening yet. Has anybody else had this problem? Any suggestions?
I'm glad I found this out before I put them on, the first time you tried to pry them off, the top would probable pop off and leave the base inside the hub. Thanks. Larry

If you have plastic center caps all you have to do is trim about 1/8th of an inch off of the prongs that lock the cap onto the wheel. The interference with the hub dust cap is at these prong tips, not the center of the cap. At least this is the case with mine, but I have center caps that are flat, not concave.

ive seen two solutions- one is to take the bearing cap off and let the grease go into the center of your wheel...the other is to modify the cap which i dont like cuz then it may fall off. What i did was bought a set of slip on 6mm spacers since the offset is wrong anyway on the boxster wheels to accomodate their different bearing design.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not referring to the clearance of the dome of the bearing cap, spacers will
accomplish that. I'm referring to the width of the bearing cap itself. The wheels will not fit over the bearing
cap, remove the bearing caps and the wheels fit fine. Seems you would have to grind the sides of the
bearing cap dome down to fit the wheel over them, then spacers would give you clearance for the dome
itself. The bearing cap top just seperated from the base when i tried to grind it.

They are 2001 17".
Dan, I just looked at the wheels and I see what you are saying. 6mm spacers will let the cap sit far enough
back to fit right and yes that will bring it back to the correct offset. Thanks.

Interesting, you have the same year car and same rims as I do yet mine just bolted up snugly. Maybe the shape of the bearing caps is slightly different. Anyway, post some pics of your car when the wheels are mounted.

I have run into this several times. I machine the inside of the wheel to remove the 45* area from the inside. If you only remove the angle you can still put the center caps on the wheels.
