Default 944 engine s/n location, type code question

I posted on PP, no respones after 28 views, so here goes:

I have an '82 euro for which I need engine # info. It has 3 and 86 cast into the rear of the block just above the flywheel. Might this indicate a later engine?

The numbers on the boss near the crank sensors are: DOI (I could be T because it runs off the top edge) and below it M44.LA. This does not square with anything I have seen about types. I can't yet find the actual s/n stamping.

Thanks

The serial number is stamped on the alternator side of the engine, by the bellhousing. It should start with a 4, and the third digit should be a letter. So if it's an 82 euro it should say 41C00001 or something like that.
Are you sure it doesn't say M44/01 or M44/03? I've never seen "LA", maybe it's for Los Angeles or Louisiana

Definitely says M44.LA, I'm thinking it might be a factory replacement engine? I don't know when it came to the US, but I'm pretty sure it has had this engine the whole time it has been here. I need to dig into the paperwork to see if any dates are there. It came from Austria originally, then FL, now in MA.

Should the s/n be on the boss that mounts the crank sensors? I don't see any other possible location.
