Default Gearbox ?'s

Has anyone taken apart a gearbox/transaxle/transmission? I have an old one that is beat, and I want to see if I can get a few gears out of it. The ring and pinion went because the PO took it to a drag strip. I got a used 944s tranny and put that in the car, and now it clunks in reverse. Figured I could see if the reverse idler gear and stuff was good in the old one and swap it into the "new" tranny. Any advice on how to take it apart is appreciated!

You should probably check your trans mounts and your CV's before you start tearing into your trans. As far as pulling the trans apart if you ever intend to put it back together you'll need the FSM.

The CV joints and shafts are new and make no noise, and the tranny mount is in decent shape. I've checked everything I can and have this strange feeling that it is inside the tranny. I have the Porsche Shop manual, the 7 volume set. I read through it and I'm stuck on a sectiopn that says move the dowel sleeves. Once I do that I should be able to get at the gears.

As long as you follow the FSM, you should be ok. Other than needing some gear pullers, soft jaws for a vise, alum or hardwood pounding blocks, and a big 12pt/triple square bit - its basically a big metal jig-saw puzzle. If you want to disassemble the pinion shaft and/or set the R/P backlash and preload, then you will need a press and some other tools/equipment.

Among the other tools / equipment as per jim above is a box of shims in varous sizes and thickness.
Once you take a box apart and then re-assemble it even without replacing anything, you will find that re-use of the originally installed shims will not give the assembly tolerances that it had before.

I plan on getting a gear puller soon. The shims are a must cause I know the tranny I have apart is wasted. Once I find my digital camera I'll get some pictures up of what the PO ( My brother) did to the tranny. I'm gonna try and salvage some parts off of it. Thanks for the suggestions!

I can post some photos that might help. I rebuilt the transaxle and it's been working well so far (about 5,000 miles now...). I'll put them on image shack this evening.

The arrow in this photo is pointing to a dowel sleeve (also called a roll pin). It's made of spring steel in the shape of a 3 dimensional letter C. When unistalled the C opens to a larger diameter and so when forced into the hole the sping action keeps it tight against the hole in the shift fork and shift rod. You need a puch that is slightly smaller in diameter than the hole (but larger in diameter than the inside of the dowel sleeve). Hammer the sucker out while trying to support the shift rod from behind. They can be re-used normally... http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/749/p1010025sg5.jpg

Thanks for the help! The shop manual says you have to remove that before you can pull the gear holder assembly out. I got it out with leaving the dowel in. Did you buy a kit to rebuild your tranny or just buy the parts separately?

I wish there was a kit... I had to source everything piece by piece. Rennlist sponsors sell most of the stuff but you may need to get a dealer to special order shims.
