Default Removing Spring Tensioner Help

What the hell do I have to do to take the spring tensioner off? I have removed two nuts that are the same size as the rest, but there is a roller that look like it also holds the tensioner on, but the crank pulley is in the way of removing it. Do you have to take the crank pulley off to take off the tensioner?!? Someone have any illustrations for taking this thing off? Im at a loss =(

Yes, the crank pulley needs to come off. The roller bolts into the tensioner but does not hold it on. But there is one more nut down low that needs to come off.

Why are you trying to remove said device?

I just finished this job this evening. It is a LOT easier to remove once the crank/balance belt pulley are out of the way,

www.clarks-garage.com has a good write-up on this procedure.

I got mine off and back on with the crank pully in place. I think there was an extra nut kind of hidden back underneath on the right side (looking from the front)-- thought i had some pictures, but can't find 'em. I had some trouble squeezing the belts past the crank pully, but finally got 'em through.

Dude, you NEED a flywheel lock to do this. Please stop, go to Clarks Garage shop manual and look up the proper procedure before you mess your car up.

+1 Get the right tools for the job. Personally, I would not risk damaging a new belt by trying to 'squeeze' it in. This is one job you DON'T want to screw up.

Do at your own risk...
To undo the crank bolt without a flywheel lock.
1. put engine at tdc on cyl #1.
2. rotate engine clockwise about 45 degrees past tdc.
3. remove Cyl#1 sparkplug.
4. stick about a 1-2 feet piece of nylon rope in thru the sparkplug hole on cyl #1.
5. from that same position start to rotate the crank counterclockwise (unbolt)
6. now the rope will not let cyl #1 piston to go all the way up by pressing up against the head (with the valves closed) and it will lock the crank.

A second way to do it is to.
put a block or something high and strong directly bellow the crank pulley.
Put the 24mm socket and rachet in position on the bolt..and the ratchet resting on the block.
Remove ignition coil wire feeding the dist.
Give it a spurt on crancking the engine..it will undo the bolt just fine..but with this method you cant bolt it back up the same way.

AGAIN DO AT YOUR OWN RISK.
With that said..i've done this countless times on volvos, my 944s2, 924s, and a 951. not a problem.
