I have an 86 n/a and when my some was born I wasnt using the car at all, living in the city and it sat in the garage. When we moved to the burbs he was old enough to use a regular car seat. It was big but I was able to cut down the base so it would fit in the back seat.

I used the lap belt to anchor the base and used an adjustable strap connected to the back ring in the hatch area to anchor the top of the car seat. It worked great for 2 years, now he is 4 and sits in the back with a modified shoulder harness, no booster. Probably illegal but it seems as safe as anything else. People would always comment on my car seat in the Porsche.

Congratulations!
Buy a minivan, you know you want to...

Seriously, that's the way to go - minivan or SUV. A station wagon might be OK depending on how tall it is, but I'm an old guy with back aches. You figure in a couple of years, taking your son on a weekend trip means packing a high chair, crib/portable playpen, a whole lot of diapers, extra outfits, every single one of his favorite overstuffed toys, etc...

Not sure if it will fit in the back but once he is old enough to face forward, go with this. We bought one and will buy another when our second son reaches 1 year old.
