Whirring noise?

Yesterday I started the 944 up quickly to move it so my van could get out. I backed up maybe 30 feet and then went forward another 30 feet to the side. When I first stopped the car (in 1st gear with clutch down) I could hear a weird whirring noise inside the car. My dad was on the outside and didn't hear anything. It was pretty hot outside, probably high 80s or low 90s.

Any idea what it was?

PS also I'm noticing a slight but noticeable vibration when I touch the brakes while driving. Like when I'm doing 60 in 5th gear, no throttle, I touch the brakes to slow down for a light and the car shakes a bit...do I have bad CVs or something?

Your brakes sound like my driver side front right now. Might have something to do with the weather we have lately...

Where was the noise coming from? If engine bay, check belts.

Vibration when braking is likely to be uneven pad deposition. A few quick hard stops from speed may take care of the problem.

Spencer, when's the last time you did a belt retension?

harrisonrick 07-03-2007 03:21 PM

rotors may need to be turned, or have some scabbing from sitting or need replacing.

whirring? balance belt?

Was the rubber center clutch replaced in this car in the past?

V2Rocket 07-03-2007 04:53 PM

The entire motor was rebuilt less than 10.000 miles ago, spring clutch. All new rotors, all new pads.

Last belt tension was probably 5.000 miles ago.

It wasn't a belt sort of noise, kind of like a fanblade spinning through air (R/P? :()

The tranny is loud in these cars, but you should have noticed that before.

Mine makes a natural whirring noise (almost supercharger-like) from up front by the timing belt cover(yes brand new timing belt, waterpump and pullies too), but it's always been there.

I've heard all sorts of noises from the belts, the tranny, the squeaky center console and the messed up seatbelt. Not to mention the loose sunroof cable and the wiggling latches.

But I've never heard this noise before. And maybe 30 minutes later I drove the car 10 miles to work and didn't hear the noise at all.

???????
