Default 968 gearbox to 944 turbo

Has anybody fitted a 968 six speed to a 944? All good so far, top box mount modified OK, 968 LH drive shaft fitted OK, but any info on speedo would be appreciated as 968 box has no speedo drive. Have heard that ABS sensor can be used as trigger.

My 1986 Turbo has a 968 six-speed. I have mixed feelings about the project. Under normal driving conditions it was a big improvement. However, when driving the car hard the gears are too close together and it is difficult to effectively shift. The car has 360 RWHP.

My mechanic installed it for me and did use the ABS system for the speedo. It works fair. It is not uncommon for the speedo needle to bounce especially if the car has been sitting for some time. Unfortunately, I don't didn't install it myself so I don't have the technical details.

By close gears do you mean the ratios are similar? Like when you upshift the RPMs are still pretty high and you need to shift again?

Yes, you'll need to use the ABS to drive the speedo. There was talk of using parts from an older A8 or RS2, but through my research I dont believe this retrofit is possible.

Be careful with the 968 Ring and Pinion. This, like the 8-valve naturally aspirated cars' transmissions can fail catastrophically. Go easy on her! Porsche released a tech bulletin on the 968 transmission and its ring and pinion gear issues.

Someone should build a frankentranny with the 968 gears, a 951S R/P, and 930 halfshafts and clutch or something.

951 R&P does not fit in the 968. While Andy is correct, there was a TSB on the 968 R&P it was due to improper lash set at the factory. The 968 is SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than the 951 box.

The ratios are too close together under full acceleration in this car. I have barely completed one shift before the car goes beyond redline in the new gear. The car is also very light, about 2,400 lbs. It picks up speed very quickly. Under light or medium load, the car is a dream.

The ring and pinion issue was only on the early units. Before installing the unit we verfied that we had a late model unit.

Don't the 968's six gears essentially cover the same spread of ratios as the 951's gears do it five?

I think it's a shorter spread of ratios overall. I remember looking up the specs and the with the engine at redline, the 968 gearbox in 6th gear has a lower speed than the 5th gear of the 951.
