Question about towing a 944

Im thinking about getting another vehicle. I want a 4x4 something that I can tow my 944 with. I also want this new vehicle to be my dd so The p-car can get more track related mods. Also I want good gas milage.
I was thinking about a new tacoma or maybe a jeep wrangler. I know its not a super duty truck, but I dont want 12 mpg aroud town.
Do you think I could tow my car with either of these?
Also what does a 944 and a flatbed trailer wiegh?

jgporsche 06-24-2007 10:33 PM

definitely NOT a jeep wrangler.

DarylJ 06-24-2007 11:15 PM

Your car is about 2700 lbs. How much the trailer will weigh depends on how much you spend on it.

Figure that part out first, then choose from what you like that has the appropriate towing capacity.

jeep wrangler is the second gayest vehical in the world rated by Top Gear... diesals get great fuel mileage but there expensive. Anything will be able to pull a 944 around but I would get a standard cuz autos suck for towing...

FORD FOR TRUCKS, ALL THE WAY!!
now that thats said, i say you find a buddy with a truck, and buy another porsche

Ban the blue oval.

nh7cy 06-24-2007 11:52 PM

get yourself a dodge ram, it has plenty of power and like they always say, if you can't dodge it, ram it! :D

i've decided, my second truck will be a dodge ram 2500, i'd hold off on buying one of these in diesel though unless you want to replace your transmission often..

Mamooguy 06-24-2007 11:57 PM

I'll bet a 928 would have the power to tow it ...

nh7cy 06-24-2007 11:59 PM

you could always buy yourself one of those cayenne's that gemballa has been putting out, 600hp and $100 to fill the tank :D

now thats an idea :)

V2Rocket 06-25-2007 01:40 AM

$100 tank every 2 days :)

A stock Cayenne would be able to tow the 944 without a problem. But if you want to go that route, just get a Touarreojrijrifjidsjisejf8rde8kodksoplspadspeg...VW SUV and save money on the same car.

nh7cy 06-25-2007 02:04 AM

but for only $215783549847 more you get to have a porsche emblem on the hood..!

Haven't looked at trucks lately, have you?

Most manufactureres (Ford, Dodge, Chevy) are down-rating the towing capacity as well as the horsepower of their diesels in manual transmission versions. Why? Because the autos are getting that good that it's actually easier on the drivetrain.

As much as it pains me to say so, being a Ford guy, the new chevy 2500/3500 diesels are excellent towing vehicles (overkill for this application). They have Allison automatics in them that seem to take quite a beating with noo problems at all. We have 2 at my fire department and they get driven....well....hard. And one of them is pulling a hovercraft around.

4x4 + towing + good mileage ... :rotflmao:

Seriously.... the best you can get is 18 mpg hwy.

I used to tow my 944 race car with 98 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0L Auto. It was marginal for intown use and I would never dream of towing more than 50-60 miles with it. Just way over matched. Best I got was 19 mpg hwy sub 65 crusing and 12 mpg towing.

You will need a V8 and that will suck the gas down. The 4x4 will cost you 2-3 mpg right there.

The only option maybe a Jeep diesal. I think the Liberty has one. Even then you are rather marginal. You need at least a 5000lbs towing capacity and 300lbs of torque. Perferably at 6000lbs tow rating however.

GodSpeed 06-25-2007 05:32 PM

OK thanks for the replies. Im still looking for the right truck. I dicided I need at least 6500lbs towing capacity, for car, trailer, peopleand extra parts.
So the search continues...
Anyone know about those new toyota fj's?
