I realize this is an old thread, but I'm one of those guys making 6 figures, wants a career change and would love to go the UTI/PTAP route. Gotta figure out how to take a drop in pay and get to Orlando thought.
One question... Did you say that 10,000 apply and they only take 14 into PTAP?? Or is the 10K the number of overall auto tech grads?

Yeah, shoulda updated this HUH... LOL Well I have been done with the program since July, and started working at Leith Porsche the next week...
To answer your question, there are MANY people that want PTAP, I was lucky to get in, i didnt have a 4.0 GPA, or 100% attendence. But i had a believeable story, I missed a day for my second son being born... I graduated with a 3.94 GPA and %99.4 attendence, FORD FACT is looked upon VERY highly, be ready to deal with high school brats the whole time, most of them dont give a crap. And they take 15 people per class (one class every 6 months).
Any other ??? just ask

Were there any people that made it into the program from other schools? I'm signed up to do wyotech next month, but one of the main issues I had with choosing between wyotech and uti was that uti claims to have all the connections with company programs (wyotech claims to have the same connections, but you don't hear of it at all compared to uti).

I'm a UTI grad myself, I went to school after having 7 years shop exp. and 10 years auto exp. and ended up practicaly teaching most of my classes. A good program, and this was before I even owned a Pcar, and Porsche PTAP was the only program i would have taken. I ended up being recruited by a Grand Am Cup team and decided to go that route instead. But Congrats! That Leith Dealer is very nice!!

Yeah, I am really enjoying myself. I honestly wish that I could have stayed in Mooresville, that is one of the few places i have felt at home in. But Hendricks just rubbed me the wrong way.

You CAN get into PTAP by having a dealer send you, but you have to be GOOD because the dealer has to pay 10K for ya!!! And PTAP is run by UTI, at a Porsche facility. So i doubt you can get into it from Wyotech. The ONLY reason i went to UTI was i saw an infomercial on it when i had a broken leg, and decided i wanted out of my dead end job.
Mike- I appreciate it, getting up at 6am going to school till 230, then going to work till either 10 or midnight was hard, but not being with my wife, 3 year old, or newborn was the hardest. They lived 2 hours away.
I also regret not getting that beer with the ATL guys, but i can make that up in a few months when i go to school again.

Hey man it’s cool that you’re living your best life, I have a few questions though, I am a UTI student and my dream goal is to get into PTAP, nothing else really interests me, I’m doing the automotive and disel program and I don’t graduate till 2020, what are the odds I can get into the program with just a 3.5 gpa, 95%++ attendance, and a clean driving record?? Other than that I have no experience, I only just got into cars a couple months ago but it’s already my passion, any tips to help me reach my goal?? Thank you! And again congratulations

Besides that this thread is 11 years ago becoming a mechanic is probably the worst decision you'll ever make. Mechanics get less respect than a child rapist. Welder, electrician, plumber are far better choices for someone looking to be a journeyman. They command higher pay so you can spend more time driving your's instead of fixing theirs. Sorry if I'm crushing your hopes, I'm telling you how it is.
