Ignition Lock

Ignition Lock
Hey guys, I purchased an Ignition Lock off eBay as a replacement for the one in my 1984 Porsche 944. When I received the ignition lock, I was a little surprised. The lock looks like the one out of my 1973 Volkswagen Bus. The keys are even the same looking (with an embosed Porsche logo on it).
The lock I have now is messed up (not the key, the actual tumblers). Where do I need to go to get the OEM replacement lock, so that I can make use of the fancy keys with the crest and the light on it?
Thanks!!!

1981 Pontiac TransAm WS6 (Olds 455)
1973 Volkswagen Type-2 Transporter

The '84 still used the old VW style lock cylinder. I don't think the newer key blanks will work with it; I never really compared the keys between the 944 and the 968, but the older key was the same blank as I had in my '72 bimmer, which was the same as the old VW style...
If the lock cylinder is out of the car, take it to a locksmith. He should be able to fix you up, and you won't need to mess with the doors being on a different key...

See, that's what's wierd... the key I have in my car now is the lighted head key, and it matches all the locks in my car as well. Is it possible that they retrofitted it? Or maybe the key blanks are the same?
Thanks!

It could be that the blanks are the same. I don't have either of the old keys any longer, so I have nothing to compare my new one to. I know the locksmith used a VW blank when he cut me a spare for the 968.

My early 944 came with a VW key from the PO... my late has a Porsche formerly lighted key.
I have never checked however to see if their profilesare the same. I'll look tonight.

Porsches used to come with the left key. They later switched to the right key. I have a friend with a 92 968 and it came with the left key. My 95 968 came with the key on the right.
The blanks are the same. Many owners of older cars have switched to the newer key.
944s use countless VW parts. The ignition you bought is undoubtedly the very part you need, and the keys are era-correct oem keys. My mom's 84 944 has the left key.
If you want to use the new ignition with your current key, and your current tumbler is broken, then either look up how to match a tumbler to a key, or how to change a key head.
