I bought a rebuilt unit from Paragon about three years ago. No problems yet...

If you look at it the only part that is "old" is the outside casing. Everything else is new so why bother paying more for the new version?

To me it's almost like the argument of new versus remanufactured engines - they are both nearly identical but with a huge difference in price.

The real issue is who did the rebuild. I have serious reservations about whoever is doing Vertex. Paragon and Zims are at the top of my trust list.

Well, since my mechanic says he has installed several of these pumps and never had any complaints, it must be a good brand.

The next question is what does his warranty cover?

So when you offered to supply your own parts for 100 bucks less than what he is charging he said he wouldn't warranty HIS work AND charge you more for labor???

not someone to whom I would entrust my car.

Yes Porsche Does make a rebuilt pump(Mines actually a FACTORY PORSCHE REBUILT) and it is reilable but they are also hard to get a Factory Rebulid. At the time I did mine there was only one rebuilt in the country and it was in AZ. So if you can wait awhile(There where on backorder) then get a Porsche Rebuilt. If not I say go with a nw one. Just my expericence though

Makes sense from his perspective. Why install a part you have no control over to then have to pull it out on your own dime at a later time/date?

If he supplies the part and it fails he can go back to his distributor and ask for a full or partial refund.

BIG question--- does said waranty cover bent valves as well? That's my issue with the rebuilds. That said, I'd trust Paragon and Zims.

Warranty is parts for a year, labor for three months. Local guy that has done work for our cars for years. He's definitely the best anywhere near here. The deal is that if it breaks in the first year, the car will be restored to the way it was when it left the shop.

Cool, does he know how much it costs to fix a belt break in a 16v?

Oh, mine is just a 8v if it makes much of a difference. But I bet he does. I think he's probably done it before. Again, he is not the kind of guy that would flake out on us. He does work on all of our cars and pretty much every Euro import in the area. If my tbelt snapped I would not rebuild, I would just ask for some sort of cash or future work credit and part the car. I think I could sell the 2.7L head for more than what I paid for the whole car. And then I would go buy a 951.

when i had the motor rebuilt on the first red S2 I paid through the nose for a new water pump. I had the shop buy it. I supplied motor mounts, plugs, cap/rotor etc., the stuff that is easy to get to. if the pump were to go he would have warranteed the job to be done again. micah posted a story about a shop "farmers" i believe that redid a S head after about 100 miles because the cam chain was defective from the box. imagine if he tried to save $30 and supplied that part!!!

the timing belt on my current red S2 was done three times in 66k miles according to receipts. the first time they put in a new water pump. the next two times a rebuilt was put in. I would rather have the first water pump in the car now with some 30k miles on it than the rebuilt one with 3k miles on it. but that is just me. starters and water pumps are two things i dont want rebuilts in my car.
