Default Going down the road..... nothing. Complete loss of pull.

What might the problem be (before I go through all the hassle of opening it up, I'd like some idea's).

55 MPH down the highway.. all of a sudden.. nothing. No forward, no reverse, nothing.

Act's like it is in neutral. Could I have sheered the clutch disk from it's center? That's what it feels like happened. I had no play in the input shaft beforehand. (still don't)

I suspected the clutch disk center was becoming soft.

correct.

I didn't think it could have been an axle output.

Check your CV's. seriously, they become disconnected all the time... had that happen to me. I could shift into any gear without the clutch, and free revv any of em without movement. check it out. mine happened on the wheel side, so it wasn't hanging down...

I THINK they have been checked already. I'll do it again though incase. I suspected the clutch because unless I am going crazy I believe I smelt a burning (possibly rubber) when the car was put into gear and revved.

Burned rubber - smells to me like you blew your rubber clutch center!

If it is, might I suggest you install a spring center?

a sheared clutch disc will make a clacking sound becuase the little teeth dont "compltetly" sheer. when they touch the car would try to move..then a teeth would skip..ect.
you could have just straight out fried the disc...no clutch material left

CONGRADULATIONS! YOU HAVE A BLOWN CLUTCH! that will be 1700-3000$ for repairs....
I just blew mine about a month ago and replaced it with a spring center. Its a different feel, but altogether, better IMHO.

I bet driving "Monteagle" helped the demise of the clutch...
