Default lighten the S2 flywheel

I am thinking of lightening the flywheel on my 1991 S2 or get a light-weight one for faster rev.

1. Can S2 flywheel be machine lightened? I have read threads about lightened 2.5L NA and turbo flywheels but can't find posts regarding the S2 lightened flywheel. The 3L and 2.5L flywheels are different, correct?

2. If I were to lighten the S2 flywheel, what weight would be most ideal? And which part of the flywheel to machined off? Anyone has pictures? I have read about people getting into troubles of stalling because of the lightened flywheel. And others wrote about lightening their 2.5L NA flywheel from 15 Lb. to 12 lb. or get a 5-6 lb. Fidanza flywheel.

3. Fidanza does not make an aluminum flywheel for 3L S2, I have checked this with them. Who else make one for the S2?

Email SPEC Clutch (www.specclutch.com) about it. They are thinking of making one but told me to have anyone interested in a SPEC LW flywheel for an S2 to email them.

I hope they are indeed moving forward with it as I only talked with him 2 weeks ago. That will be great!

My setup uses S2 clutch/flywheel so that's why I'm interested.

Hi Brandon,

Which cat bypass did you order? I was thinking of replacing the cat w/ a bypass pipe but weren't sure where to order and how much they are. Do you think you will get any performance improvement w/ the bypass pipe?

Eric,

I actually got the bypass pipe for free from a local Porsche repair shop that does business with the P-car dealership i work at. I will probably get a little bit of an increse. But my engine isn't stock either. but I may not see a gain either, but it was free so its worth trying. As for where to get one. did you check out speedforceracing.com? I think they have one. I am going ot be ordering and exhaust and headers from there. I hear they make pretty good stuff

Besides www.specclutch.com, are there other companies offer readily available light flywheel for S2? Or has anyone reduce the thickness/weight of their stock flywheels?

Hi Brandon,

Thanks for the info. I have checked www.speedforceracing.com for the cat bypass pipe. Is it the "Bolt-in Resonator" or the "test pipe"?

Fidanza's 944 flywheel is 6 lbs.

My stock flywheel was lightened by Top End Performance in CA ( http://www.racetep.com/flywheel.html ). IIRC, it came out to just a hair above 10 lbs. It made quite a difference in acceleration.

I lightened (had lightened) the flywheel on my S2 and added a spec clutch. I can feel the difference, although I would not do this mod on a car that you plan on driving on the street too much.
Good luck,
Luis

With less mass on the flywheel, how does it impact the RPM steadyness of the idle?

Are there any bad 'gotchas' out there by doing this?

Wondering whether I should include it in my long range plans or not.

RPM steadiness is fine, I would say that the clutch "grabs" a lot quicker/shorter , too quick/short for a lot of people's taste.

You are saying that the amount of clutch pedal throw to engage the clutch is shorter? Or that when the clutch does engage, it grabs and is jerkier?

One would think that if it's either, it's just a re-training of the left foot to be smooth again.
