Default Paragon is now carrying 944 Manual Steering bits

Just recently noticed that Paragon is carrying manual steering racks, intermediate shafts, and complete kits.

They have a great price on the intermediate shaft at only $118.

http://www.paragon-products.com/prod...347.027.01.htm

Just thought I'd make an FYI announcement as this stuff until recently has been hard to find and a bit pricey.

are tie rods different for manual and power steering? 470 ish wouldn't be TOO bad for a conversion without having to change the tie rods, but 700+ is still pretty rediculous.

Yes, the tie rods are different.

Most people can seem find a used rack, but it is the rods and intermediate shaft that have always been so cost-prohibitive (and are always worn out when you buy a used system).

I've been eyeing that up, especially since my engine will be out of the car soon. There's a kit that shows up on Ebay from time to time that I have bid on but I've never gotten to the reserve price.

That Kit is from Ian's. They want the same amount as Paragon.

Tifo,
Would you consider it ok to trade up my Power Steering for a Manual rack? I mean cost wise?

My uncle is a mechanic in wisconsin and one of his customers with an imacculate 83 944 wants to goto power steering. I told my uncle i'd buy it or trade her for my power steering. (Its an older lady with a 83 944 that has something crazy like 13k original miles)

Cool -- they even seperately offer those manual tie rods for late offset cars! Last time I checked (a year ago) noone could even special-order these puppies.

It's a good deal for you if that is what you want. If your car is a late car, you are going to need to purchase the later manual tie rods. Also, for her 83, she will need the pulley for the PS belt, her car does not have one. Is the crank long enough on the 83 to accomodate that? I have never retro-fitted PS to an 83, but that could be an issue. Can someone confirm?

Thanks for the info Tifo. I guess i'll have to drive a car with manual steering to see if i like it or not. For some reason i've had it set in my head that i want manual steering, why i don't know lol.

There are quite a few 83's here, including mine, with PS so I'm pretty confident the early crank wouldn't be an issue. Getting the pulley shouldn't be a problem.

hey wes, i know exactly why I want manual steering. my rack started leaking and in a money saving manor i just pulled the pump, res, and cooler, and all the other plumbing. so now i have a manual rack with no fluid or pump so its pretty hard to turn.

I would say there is no sense in paying money to get manual steering if your power steering works, i just didn't have money to fix it at the time, now its a bit too late to go back because i have the 951 oil cooler in the place of the power steering cooler and i dont even know where the pump is and i rearanged stuff so now the res wont fit...

another thing is it messes with you if you have another car that does have power steering, takes a couple minutes to get used to how easy it is to turn.

anyways if you decide not to get her used 83 rack, i'll take it, for a reasonable price.
