Default Driver Side Mirror cam loose

I have a 87 944S and the retaining screw that holds the driver side mirror housing onto the base (larger diameter retaining screw that electirc wiring runs through with heavy duty spring on the outside. Assembly is what lets the mirror fold and stay in position) has backed out. I have the mirror base remove and I cannot put enough pressure on the screw and spring to get it to rescrew in. How do I remove the mirror assembly from the door. There are no quick disconnects for the wiring so I guess I have to take the mirror apart somehow to disconnect the wire but for the life of me I cannot figure it out. Please help!
