Cool My Porsche light now has *****

Yup, that's right. I decided the weak stock key light needed more power. <<insert Tim Allen grunting>>

Stock key voltage requirement: 1.5v (weak)
Kevin's key voltage requirement: 4.5v (argh argh arghhh)
Result? 1100mcd (a normal D-cell powered flashlight is ~700mcd)

I had to machine out the bulb port as well as the battery area and even did away with the crappy way Porsche connect the ground contacts and made mine so it was failsafe. Notice the manly bulge of the button and LED, hahaha. What can I say? My key now has *****.

And this half-parody of a thread is useless without pics, right?

Very cool!

How about more details!

Which light did you use?
Battery?
How did you modify the ground?

How about a picture of the internals?

(a normal D-cell powered flashlight is ~700mcd)
Where did you get that figure from?
I would expect a D-cell powered flashlight to be maybe 70,000mcd, or at the very least 15-20,000mcd.

Sure, a 11,000mcd LED is very bright, since it comes from such a tiny spot, just like why a lot of HID lights are so offensive, yet offer the same light output as a halogen bulb, since the light output is from a tiny spot. I'm pretty sure most decent D-cell flashlights put out at least 20,000mcd.

I was told those numbers by the guru at Radio Shack.... though maybe I got the trailing zeros off. The gist of what he said was "this LED at 3.6 volts has as much intesnsity as a full size flashlight."

Didn't see the site before, I'll post internal pics later on for you all.

Argh argh argh indeed!

I lost the little copper connector that goes inside. Speaking of which, I actually switched key heads when I sold my '86 because it was much newer than the 84 key.

Talk about cheap, eh?

Just for s*** and giggles, I took a 22,000mcd white LED that I have, and used it right next to my D-cell Mag-lite. There is no comparison. The mag-lite is probably 5-10x brighter.
Dunno what that's worth, just thought I would post it up here

On the other hand, I have a 50,000mcd LED, but there is no way it will fit in the key head, and I think it will drain the batteries pretty fast!
I had considered converting my key head over to a LED, but I never use the light for any constructive purposes, and I would just keep killing batteries playing with it.
