Default 944 exhaust only uses 1 muffler?!

Hey gang,

I'm doing some quick and dirty research on exhaust systems for my N/A. I have a buddy at MagnaFlow and they are hooking me up with a custom exhaust, I just have to buy the mufflers here at work and bring them down to MagnaFlow and they'll build it for me free of charge.

I'm looking at pics of aftermarket 944 exhausts, and it looks to me like the 944 system only uses one rear oval muffler, and that's it! Is this true?

If that's the case, I'm going to install two mufflers (one round glasspack just after the cat, plus a rear oval). That should help quite a bit in the sound department.

Does anyone know off hand what size muffler I can fit under there? They have 4" or 6" round bodies for the "resonator" just after the cat, and then the oval muffler can be pretty big it looks like. Any info on muffler size is appreciated! I'll post pics/soundbytes when it's on the car.

I'm trying to convince one of their tech guys to do it for me this Saturday.

Hey;

Early cars only had the muffler. Later cars had a small round resonator just aft the cat. I don't think I'd bother with that. Needless weight. A glaspack is not the thing to use either, as it will simply blow out over time... unless it is packed with stainless.

As far as I know the 944 has no resonator.

The 944 really isn't too loud either. I don't think you really need a resonator, unless the oval muffler from magnaflow you get has very little sound supression.

My early 944 has a single muffler and the 951 similarly has a single muffler (although two catylitic elements - the big one for the main pipe and a little one in the wastegate dump pipe).

Cool deal.

I'll go with a round muffler (6" body, 18" length perhaps) at the centerpipe, and the oval at the back.

Running with only a single non-chambered muffler will be way too loud for my taste. It's not even really a matter of volume, either...it sounds too rough and un-civilized. Not to mention, I'm in So Cal. I'll get pulled over in a hot second.

I've always added an extra "resonator" to my aftermarket exhausts, on pretty much all of my cars. It always sounds 100% better than the same exhaust w/o the extra resonator, and doesn't really rob any power. It tones the sound down and smooths it out, creating a deeper "growl" rather than a "chewing on nails" raspy snarl. I don't think "raspy snarl" fits on a Porsche. haha.

The only time my NA's ('84 and '87) got loud was while I was running a test pipe with the stock muffler.

I have just a standard Magnaflow welded in the back instead of the stock muffler. It sounds pretty good, but I might get a resonater welded in later to quiet it down a tad. (I like quiet)

I have a magnaflow race muffler along with 2.5 inch piping from the cat back. The cat I have is a high flow cat also. It is loud. Gets raspy at about 4 grand. When I say raspy I mean letting the killer bees out of the hive. I have figured out what I should do to get rid of the rasp.

Doesn't the 928 have this setup? Basically 4 mufflers (2 on each exhaust)

Well, every Volkswagen I can think of, including the VR6, has at least two. A "suitcase" shaped resonator about midway down stream, then the rear muffler.

You are all wrong. This is the way a 944 exhaust is supposed to look.

Sorry I forget where I got this photo to give credit.

Smile Mufflers for ZPorsche

XKE's all had 4 mufflers...2 big ones underneath and the chrome ones that you see hanging out the back...2 per pipe...just in case you were wondering...Not sure about Healeys..If the had more than one, it would scrape the ground though..3" of ground clearance on a good day and level ground..Thanks, Tiger 03447
