Default Rotted radiator cap seal - generic replacement avail.?

My radiator resevoir cap is original, and the rubber is toast. I want to replace it, but NAPA and Kragen don't have it. P-Dealer is out of the question...too far to drive. So, the question I have is this: can I replace it with a cap that's "made" for a different car? I think I need to know something about how many lbs it can take. All I see on my cap is "150", but I don't know what to do with that. Any body know on this one? Tried a search btw, ony found stuff about radiators...not what I need. Thanks guys.

Call around. This is a standard part.

The www.partsamerica.com websight shows it available at 5 Checkers within 6 miles. This'll be Kraguns for you. A Prestone RR30.

Sorta reminds me of getting plugs recently. When I said "Porsche" the counterman said "I hate those, we never have the parts." I assured him he'd have the right part this time. The sprak plugs were on the shelf. Maybe they didn't want to try.

most will give you a 13 pounder and the older ones need less pressure.

i replaced what i thought was a defective cap on the old '84 with a 13# and forced water out places i'd never seen leaks before and it turned out the original cap was good but wouldn't hold 13# which was why i replaced it.

AHHHHHHHH, sorry man, go OE or you Will have issues, ask Pete and a few others. I don't know if it's just a metric size or what, but these cars seem to hate aftermarket caps. I think the OE can be had for about 15 bucks

siiiiiiiiiiiigh. Really? I take it the cap will leak or break somehow? I HATE going to the dealership. Those bastards won't let customers make orders for out-of-stock items (which means TWO round trips for 1 part) over the phone or get stuff mailed to them. Over 1 hour drive in traffic. BLARGH.

The cap I bought does fit, and I put it on, took it off, and checked for a seal mark on the rubber, and it's there alright, with plenty of material on either side of where the rubber contacts the openings, and it's tight...so maybe it will work?

IIRC, a 150 marking on the cap means its a 1.5 bar rated cap. The earlies used a 1 bar ( or a 100 marking). 1 bar = 14.5 psi. I don't remember right off the top of my head when they changed over to the higher rated cap, and maybe it was only on the turbos for all I know. I don't know if what you've got will do any harm at all, I kinda doubt it if the system is in good operating condition otherwise. I have heard, like Andy said, about using non OEM part, but can't remember from where, or how it goes. I would think a cap is a cap, if it fits and is close to the rated OEM, it should work. I have no personal experience with this however. I've always mail ordered for a cap if I needed it from one of our many sponsers. Now that you've got one on right now, you should have plenty of time to order an OEM replacement, in case this one doesn't work out?

I've run a 16lb Stant lever release cap for 18 months with no issues at all on the 951
