Default How do I seperate engine from bell housing?

Hey gents, I can't seperate the engine from the bell housing. I have the four main bolts and the sensor bolts out. It seems that the clutch is stuck to the pressure plate. I've moved it all around with a ply bar to where you can see an inch of seperation all around. It's like the pilot bearing is stuck. What did I miss????????

To remove lever.. It has been a while but I think this is how it goes, there is a small bolt that locks the shaft that the clutch fork piviots on, remove the small bolt( may have a jam nut, loosten that first) then screw the bolt into the end of theshaft, spray kroil( or similar ) on the shaft, use a brass drift or a screw driver to remove the shaft, It will slide out then you can remove the bellhousing. I sure hope this made some sense.... I am no author.... good luck. look at a haynes manual, they have pictures.

Yup, clutch fork.

That can be a challenge to pull the main pin out. Many folks have gone near crazy on antics to try and remove. Do a search for all the tricks.

While I didn't remove mine this way, I like the idea of a homemade slide hammer. I think the threaded hole in the end of the pin is 8mm. Get a couple foot length of threaded rod some nuts and washers. And something heavy with a hole through it like a sledge hammer head. Then you should be all set.

You do not want to go down the road of shearing a bolt off in the threads or stripping them out. There are some pretty funny stories on how wrong things can go. Funny only if you weren't involved in the mess.

The best way I've found with normal tools. Drive the stop pin all the way through on the opposite end of the pivot shaft. It will push all the way through and drop inside, then you can drive it out either way and be able to use a long extension or whatever will fit, about a 3/8" extension is best. I've done 3 like tis now. Be sure to drive the pin back in,it will go in from the outside also. Good luck and don't forget the jam bolt at the bottom side of the shaft, the pin is at the top.

Do you need to do this to remove the engine from the car? I am half-way through this job right now, and haven't run into this issue yet.

You could probably get around it without dropping the whole drive train. You are going to have to slide the engine forward around 8" to clear the drive shaft. Getting things back together will be a real challenge as you have a heavy engine, aligning the splines, pilot bearing, etc.

I'd say pull the pin so you have some play. It is not that hard if you approach it right.

I don't quite understand what the problem is. Are we talking about the clutch release fork?
Shouldn't it have nothing to do with removing the engine? Or do I have this whole thing completely wrong in my head...

Well, I uess I'll have to find a Haynes manual (I never thought I'd say that). I'm not at the car now and I just can't picture the process. I did the threads here on Rennlist and I'm baffled. Did Clark's garage also and (Da!) no pictures. Does anyone know of a post where there are some pictures of this process available?

No, on second thought, I can't do the Haynes manual (personal thing).

Zero, you don't need to remove the bell housing to remove the engine from the car. just undo the bolts from the torque tube to the bell housing. Remove the bell housing when the engine is on the ground. easiest way. It is the clutch fork that holds the bell housing to the engine and causes a helluva headache on your first time (because you have no idea what's holding it together...)

leave the bell housing on, I was thinking you were doing a clutch job. I didn't add it up to you being the guy with the popped motor. I'd pull the fans and radiator for room and their safety. There are 2 bolts at the top sides for the radiator, back them off and it will tilt towards the motor to get it out. Good luck

Just let it die. don't worry about removing it. It'll fall into the archives eventually.
