Yes, thicker oil can potentially lower your horsepower and potentially increase MPG. But it is what our engines need, period.
Motul is French. A good brand. But many good oils out there.

The engine is working harder to pump heavy oil, all the time. Maybe worse when the oil is cold, but always more energy needed to pump the oil.
There is a reason newer cars run very thin oils and thin oils have been used as a dyno trick to unleash more HP.
Obviously there is a too-thin and too-thick, IMO thinner but adequate is better than too thick.
I have noticed thicker oils can increase lifter pump-up time, and that's not good. I wonder about adequate oiling of the valve guides with thicker oil also. I think the most obvious wear of oiled parts is the valve guides, or maybe it's about equal with the rod bearings.
It'd be interesting to see how these parts held up on a street car with 200K on it or so running 10w30 or the similar. I am running 5w40 myself.

FWIW, I'm also currently running 5w40, though Irish winters aren't much so I'd be equally happy with a 10w40. I use Millers (a UK brand), though that might more difficult to find on the continent.
(I believe Fuchs is also a European brand?)

I don't want to talk about all the reasons.
If you are new to your 944 and you don't know what oil is in there and what it likes, I would say go with Mobil 5W50 FS X2 (not X1) then if it drinks oil outside the race track, you might go to Millers EE Performance 10W50 (not 5W50) and then Redline 5W50. If it still drinks oil, try to find a culprit.
