New Owner - Daily Driver Insurance

Hey all. Work continues to get my '83 daily driver up to a reliable enough state to daily drive. But this is a question about Insurance because I was SHOCKED at the cost of driving this car.

$535 for 6 months, WITHOUT COLLISION COVERAGE.

It seems that $340 of that is for Personal Injury Protection Coverage. My agent explained to me that is based on the likelihood that I would be injured if involved in an accident in this vehicle. OK, so chalk that up to State Farm having bad luck with 944's in injury claims, I suppose. But damn, that seems like a lot of money for simply being on the road. Again, no collision coverage. I'll be cancelling before the end of the first month.

Based on the above, can someone recommend another provider that could give me a more competitive quote?

Hagerty Classic Car Insurance.... my annual bill is 331 for an 84 944 AND an 86 944 turbo... agreed value at $5000 each.

Those are great numbers, but this car is meant to be daily driven... I don't want to have a payout issue if someone at the insurance company notices there is more mileage than agreed to in the policy.

No mileage limit. But, call them, don't depend on a random internet stranger... :)

Rates are dependent on many factors, among them location, your age, driving history. That being said, like most things in life, shop around.

Hagerty here, declared value ($10k), no maximum mileage per year, cost is around $400-500 per year. Includes drivers club and cherish vehicle options as well. Cherished vehicle lets you keep the car if its totaled out with no buy-back (at least thats my understanding). Super important if you have ever have an accident and want to part the car out or keep parts for a new project.

You should definitely call Hagerty and inquire.

Note: Hagerty wont cover you for track day or autox - you need track day insurance for that.

Hagerty generally wants you to not use the insured car as a daily driver, though. I did a quote with them last year and recall they wanted to know you had a "regular" policy for another car too.

Currently I have my 944 on USAA with my 2 Subarus and the rate you mention doesn't seem too out of line. I don't have collision coverage on my car - just "comprehensive" and the required medical liability and it is $195/6 months, driving under 1000 miles/year.

My daily-driver 2017 Forester is $421/6 months and that is an infinitely safer car than a 944...lol

A lot of the premium depends on where you live and whether the car is garaged. In 2016 I moved from LA city/county to an adjacent county and my premium dropped like 30%.

Yeah that was a policy stipulation when I got Hagerty. They were flexible on the amount of miles I put on per year but they definitely didn't want to insure a daily driver.

If you don’t have another car insured by some other insurer Hagerty will not insure your car. This was the experience my brother had when he wanted to insure his only car (Porsche) with Hagerty. They wouldn’t.

I do have another car, as does my wife. So we're covered there. But my "other car" is a Transit Van that I use as a mobile garage for my bicycles and motorcycles. I just don't enjoy driving it. I'd prefer to drive the Porsche as a daily.

I'll do a bunch of online quotes next week. We shall see.

The reason the original quote shocked me is that it was equivalent to my wife's policy on her '18 Audi Q5 and within $50 of my '19 Ford Ranger. Each of those policies ALSO includes full collision coverage and free damaged glass replacement. My pre-conceived idea of "affordable daily driver alternative" was shattered! Welcome to P-car life!

Not sure where you guys are getting your numbers and even though insurance has recently gone up everywhere, I just got a quote for full coverage on a 944 turbo and an Alfa Romeo Milano for $500/year from Progressive, $500/comp & $1000/collision deductible on both. My current insurance is through Metromile and they charge about $45/month plus .08/mile at their new inflated price for just the Milano so I'm looking to switch companies. I'm 57 with no accidents or tickets lately and I'm currently living in a town just outside of Nashville.

Hey BB..I’m over here close to Johnson City. I know that V2 is close to Nashville, and there is another guy here on the list (Voodo?) down close to Chattanooga. Know any other 944 owners in the area? I know a bunch of guys get together for a late summer run on the dragon’s tail and another over to Helen, Ga to raid Elliott’s collection down there. If enough guys get together here, perhaps we could meet up once or twice a year and not be “lone wolves”, going around. Just a thought..Tiger

I grew up in Knoxville, does that count?

The classic car insurers in Ireland also require you to have a "regular" policy on another car -- but they don't stipulate which you drive daily, as long as you don't exceed the mileage limit (which is generally 5K/year).

I was a bit skeptical, but tried the Jerry app. It's an automated broker that will shop around for you. It seemed ok and my rates are high like everyone else's. What recently surprised me, in a good way, was they notified me that a claim from a long time ago had passed the 5 year mark, and that I was likely to get lower rates as a result. The resulting quotes are $130 a month lower. Nice, especially since I was ignorant of the 5 year thing.

The consensus I've heard is to shop around and change companies frequently, every year or two. They give you a teaser rate and then increase it gradually for no reason. Jerry automates that for you.

Insurance agent here... Numbers can be wildly different based on where you live, your insurance score, your claims history and a lot of other factors like your age etc. Also, insurers have different "goals" that constantly shift. For example, in Texas right now, rates have gone up a lot and some companies are experiencing high losses, causing them to raise rates. But the rate increases are seldom "across the board," all those risk factors mentioned before come into play. Other companies in Texas may have lower loss ratios in certain zip codes and are lowering rates to soak up more business. Let's not even get started on homeowners insurance right now. It's been going up so much.

Keep your credit score in tip-top shape, don't file a lot of claims (avoid towing claims, glass claims, claims that are close to your deductible amount - don't file a $650 claim with a $500 deductible, you'll get $150 payout and then higher rates on renewal), carry higher deductibles, drive defensively, have a dash cam so you can prove a NAF (Not At Fault) accident, and be willing to shop around if you need to.

On homeowners, I have customers being non-renewed for claims history. It's a tight market right now. But some of that is avoidable. I had a prospect with six claims yesterday (homeowners), two of the claims were less than a $500 payout, one was a zero payout, and the others were small payouts, relatively. Now no one will write them.
