originally RUF transplanted the early 996's 3.4 liter into their 3400S, which pumped out around 320 HP with some exhaust/intake/cpu mods. the 3.4 L is almost a direct swap, as compared to the 3.6 which requires a bit more massaging. IIRC most of the 3.6 swap issues arise from the engine/flywheel mating to the transmission/clutch (which is not too bad).

i expect the 986 to shed it's sissy image as newer porshes are developed and sold. (we all know that it is the american consumer who is responsible for the production of increasingly sissy cars.) that is when i will purchase a nice 986S and do the 3.4L swap in my own garage.

It's funny that they still sell the 3400S along with the 3600. It may be because of what you said, it's just cheaper and easier to do it with the 3.4 and people might want to save some money... on a ruf, i don't care too much about money, but I guess some people might.

Ok, this is a picture of the car when it was at its only DE event driven by her, rather easily I might add. Last night I was not able to get home in time to get any good pictures in the daylight, I will hopefully get away from this place early enough to show the car in it's today form, which is eccentially the same, but has more added on.
