holy "smokes"
i started my car for the first time since my timing belt and water pump change. now it sounds like i have a supercharger. i think one of my belts may be a little tight. but also, i noticed some smoke coming from under my eaders and i figured it was probly junk and oil that had built up on the bottom of the engine while it was sitting and it was jsut burning off. but i looked and my overflow tank was empty. i opened the cap on the tank and I could hear it all surging around in there doing stuff and then a bunch of smoke/steam came out. do i just need more coolant or could this be more serious?

as for your problem...if you stopped it immediatly and put some coolant in and did all the neccessary stuff...i don't see that anything bad wold happen...but i am not a good mechanic either....heh

yeah i went and rechecked my tank.
he overflow tank is empty and when i squease the head-to-radiator hose i hear gargaling of whatever coolant actually is in there. i guess i jsut need more coolant because the stuff i put in wasnt enough, we did drain it all. but i figured the stuff int he block would stay in there.

It sounds like you have a lot of air in the cooling system. Add more coolant and open the bleed valve. You may have to do this a few times but the air will eventually bubble out of the valve. Messy but necessary.

There's gotta be something else going on -- coolant doesn't just disappear without a leak someplace. Needless to say, keep an eye out for leaks!

That "super charger" sound is from the belts (probably the balance belt) being too tight.
The cooling system holds just over 2 US gallons, and you need to bleed the system several times to get it right.
To bleed the system, either park the car on an incline with the front higher than the rear, or put the front end on jackstands.
Set the heater controls to full hot, and start the engine. Rev the engine a couple of times (you don't want the engine to warm up), and then shut it down.
Remove the expansion tank cap and open the bleed bolt. Add coolant/water to the expansion tank until the level hits the MAX mark.
Pull the free end of the over flow hose (its attached to the expansion tank filler neck) up, put your hand over the filler neck and gently blow into the over flow hose. Watch the bleeder bolt. When you see a solid stream of coolant, tighten the bleeder bolt. Add coolant/water to the expansion tank so the level is between the MIN and MAX marks.
Put the expansion tank cap back on, check the bleeder bolt, and start the engine. Leave the heater controls set to full hot and rev the engine a couple of times.
Repeate the process until you do not get any air out of the bleeder.
Drive the car for a couple of days and pay attention to how the heater works. If you get more heat with the car moving than you do when the car is at idle you need to bleed some more.

Sounds like alot of air in the sytem.....Cmon Brett did you not bleed the system, or just dump coolant in there and go....Oh Brett....And as for the belt being to tight....Well don't worry mine also had a sligth whine, but after about 1000 miles it died down as the belt stretched a bit, and then when I retensioned after 1500 it went completely away....Im sure its not as loud as Ian's was...Is it..Cause you said it was not that loud of a whine....hmmm I would not worry about it....Aim Me...

Make sure your belts are not too tight. A timing belt that is too tight will wear out the belt and the bearing of the waterpump prematurely. It could be something as simple as the roller (one that keeps the belt from flapping) being too close. It is not supposed to touch the belt and spin all the time.
