951 Radiator Into 924S?

Hello,

I know the larger radiator from a 951 will drop into an 944 if you swap out the bottom support and lower hose. Is the same true for a 924S? I'll be doing a bunch of work on one I bought recently and want to do what I can to keep it running cool in summer's heat.

FWIW, I got a 951 radiator from a 924S guy on this forum who bought it from a dealer and was told later that it would not fit. Maybe he will chime in or you can contact a reputable 924/944 repair shop and ask them,

If a 951 radiator can be used in a 944 NA using the parts you describe, this should apply to the 924S.

The 924S and the 944 NA radiators are the same p/n according to the PETs.

+1 the 924S/944 radiators are the same but I’m not sure the bottom radiator mounts are. There are a lot of small body parts that are different on the 924S. As stated previously you need a 951 bottom mount to fit a 951 radiator to a 944 but if the 924S bottom mount is different to the 944, the 951 mount may not fit. It would be good to have someone physically check to confirm.

That's precisely my concern. I'm unable to locate a diagram in the PET that effectively shows all of the front-end sheet metal. I'll probably have to contribute to Edrades' Patreon (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnj...kXJADV54q8wK9w) to see if I can get him to answer my question. That guy's worked on tons of both 944s and 924s.

Thank you for everyone's suggestions.

You can use it on a 924S. You can use the stock bottom end and lower it with long bolts and use washers and nuts in between to set the correct distance.
Kinda the same that Porsche did on the 968 Turbo cars.

I put a 951 radiator in my NA. Not sure if the later 924S is any different than my 84 NA, but I think I had to cut out the stock lower mount and add a 951 lower mount with a small spacer on either side. It's been 10 years so I don't remember the exact details...

Just take the lower section off and add bolts with washers and nuts and adjust as needed.
Pic is from how I did it on my 968 Turbo S/RS tribute. On those cars the radiator has to be lowered to clear the IC.

Good luck

Yes, but does the lower section unbolt on a 924?

I think the op wants to confirm that the lower section on a 924S is actually removable like on the 944 and that the 944 turbo bottom mount will bolt on in the same position. That would be the easiest and quickest “factory” solution. I know certain parts on a 924 are welded whereas on the later 944 they were bolted so some parts that bolt on to a later 944 may not be as easy to fit on a earlier 924 based chassis.

Good observation.

I just looked at my 924S project and the radiator lower mount is not a bolted on cross member type of item. Instead, it is made of two 'L' brackets that are integral to the side supports/guides which are welded to the chassis.

Likely have to do some rework on the lower portion of the brackets.

If you remove the ‘L’ brackets (drill out the spot welds) I wonder if a 951 bottom mount would then fit maybe with captive nuts fitted into the chassis to secure it?

Chassis measurements must be identical 924/944, right?

Yes I see that but even if it does not unbolt it cant be that hard to get it separated and reatached in a way so that the 951 radiator fits.

I will also go down that route on my next 924 RS project car.

No doubt possible with a little reconstructive surgery.

924S radiator support in red items below. 968 radiator support in black (similar to 944 NA).

Thank you VERY much for the pictures. I don't even have the car I'll be working on yet (in shipment from another state). It looks like it should be easy enough to modify the mounts, though I wonder about the relative positioning I'll end up with...I'm 99% sure it'll be fine using the 951 lower hose. I should have the car in the next week, and will make a final determination then. I also have a ton of other work planned as well, so we'll see where my appetite for modifying stuff is.

If you look at the pic I posted of my 968 Turbo S replica you can see the radiator is lowered about 25mm still using the stock 951 hoses. I doubt you will have any issues with the hoses. And from the looks of the pics Jay posted of his 924S it will be easy enough to make the lower section adjustable to dial in the correct height.
