Default Gasoline Smell when car is sitting

I notice a gasoline smell in my garage after the 944 Turbo has been sitting for a while. When driving, I do not smell any raw gas. But only when it is parked in the garage for a day or more. Thoughts on possible cause?

Check your fuel injectors where they seat and look for a little gas pooling at the bottom of the visible injector. The plastic welds develop hairline cracks due to age/heat and leak tiny drops of gas. Just put your nose down there and smell the injectors if you can't see anything to be certain.

There is a canister that protrudes through the floor in the rear hatch area under the carpet. My 951 required a simple repair to a connection that cracked. Is the smell noticeable in the passenger compartment?

Mine did that. When I changed my fuel pump, I very slightly tightened the connection to the gas tank bottom; the smell disappeared.

Probably have to pull that piece out and change the old seal there. Next time...

Yes check the fuel level sender and fuel pickup/return unit under the hatch carpet. Some soapy water and a warm day will show you if the barbs are cracked and leaking.

The smell is not in the car but actually outside the car when its been sitting in the garage for a while. I checked the fuel lines going to the engine and the look pretty clean.

Have you opened the hood and taken a sniff around? I'm going with an injector seal leak.

Or this:
Check your fuel injectors where they seat and look for a little gas pooling at the bottom of the visible injector. The plastic welds develop hairline cracks due to age/heat and leak tiny drops of gas. Just put your nose down there and smell the injectors if you can't see anything to be certain.

Did you install new lines recently? I've noticed that fuel seems to permeate through the fuel lines I installed on my car last year, though I only smell it when my head in down close by them when I'm doing other work on the engine.

Actually, I did install new fuel lines the past year. Have not noticed as much lately, but really have not been driving it much so really can't say.

If they're braided stainless steel or nylon with rubber, most likely the smell is from permiation. The smell will of fuel will get through rubber lines. I have the same problem. In the process of converting all my fittings and fuel lines to PTFE, which have a liner inside the rubber line.

It could be coming from the charcoal canister under the driver's fender. If the canister is full of fumes and the charcoal is totally permeated, and has absorbed all that it can hold, or if there by some chance, actual fuel may be in there, it might leave a smell in the garage. Give the driver's door/fender area close to the hinge a good sniff and see if it is more concentrated in that area. It could be that the canister needs to be replaced, as I think they are sealed units. Just a thought.

Re: "Actually, I did install new fuel lines the past year." Did that include the rubber lines from the fuel tank to the fuel pump & around the fuel filter? Also when I replaced my fuel filter I noticed such a garage smell, I just had to give the hard line to fuel filter a wee tightening to stop the weeping. Good luck.
