Cheaper parts resource?
Hey all,
Over my years of getting a little better at taking care of my 944 Turbo I've become aware that quite often there are perfectly good alternatives to a genuine Porsche part - sometimes it's a part for a VW or Audi that is cheaper simply because it's available through a different supply chain, sometimes it's a third-party product... it strikes me we could do with some kind of central resource/reference for alternates for various Porsche parts. Does anyone know of such a thing? The thing that prompted me to post this is that I'm about to do a bit of exhaust work, and there just HAVE to be cheaper versions of those c. £20 crush rings in the turbo exhaust. I know that's not a lot of money for something that's sealing your exhaust, but it's just a simple hollow aluminium (?) alloy ring... looks more like £5 than £20 to me. But maybe I'm cheap ;-) |
i bet you could smear those crush donuts with copper RTV and use em again.
i actually always just reuse the exhaust donuts and gaskets (except for those at the cylinder head), have had my exhaust off a number of times over the years and never had a leak. i suppose you just keep tightening the bolts until they're snug which will be a little more than the "last time" you squeezed the donuts. |
I agree, but keeping such a resource up to date would be a challenge. Some suggestions are scattered around the forum (injectors come to mind) so searches are sometimes productive. The regular suppliers have alternative sources (often from the same manufacturer as the Porsche part but without the Porsche name.
An early list of parts containing some alternatives is here, but it is very old: http://www.924.org/parts/parts.htm I find eBay can be useful, often parts have an extensive list of cars that they are compatible with... check what VW or Audi model is on the list and visit the local dealer. Then course there is DYI. I have made the plastic inserts that go in the door handles (NLA from Porsche and VW), fuel hoses, the under hood insulation and rebuilt the transmission mounts. |
I agree with the exhaust rings sentiment; I was shocked how much it cost me to re-install the exhaust! Up here, they are $40-60 CDN each. Then you peek inside the exhaust shop and they've got hundreds of them hanging on the wall, all different sizes. Surely someone has some experience stocking up on these? |
I have re-used those rings before, and I'm sure I'll do it again! (Obviously not the ones I had to remove with chisels, picks and harsh language…)
Grant, you have me thinking of 3D printing - that will be an increasingly attractive option for a lot of the smaller plastic and maybe rubber parts on our cars. I see a database of downloadable models in someone's future… |
