Ok, I've got a (guards) red 944, and a black rear bumper cap.




And, after searching the local hardware stores, Amazon hooked me up with the Gloss Sunrise Red.





What kind of surface prep should I do? Scuff it up with 220 sandpaper?

Or steel wool? Or nothing other then cleaning with acetone?

400 wet/dry 3M paper sanding with soapy water.

Multiple light coats, don't be in a hurry with heavy coats.

I doubt that is going to come anywhere near close to matching.. Maybe scour ebay for used in your cars color ?

No match on faded bumper


I think it is pretty darn close in color! Note that the rear was repainted circa 2000. Except for the bumper. Bumper was not repainted.

I think it looks good, especially considering the upper surfaces of the car are faded. If you want it all to match, you'll have to paint the whole car. But this cleans up one noticeable area on the car without much effort.

My 944spec is Stone Gray, at least most of it is, it's been repainted before and whatever they used isn't the same color.
I'm thinking of trying Rustoleum Smoke Gray on some damage and see how close it is. I know it's not metallic, but if it meets the race car "acceptable at 50ft at 50mph", I'll be happy.

All my previous cars were Farm & Fleet Dairy Barn enamel white. It was cheap and it stuck to the car. Maybe I'll repaint this one some day.

Nice improvement! If you polish the surrounding areas with a buffer and a decent machine glaze, it would deepen the factory red a bit and you'd have an even better match. And then I bet most people who see won't notice it unless you point it out. Which I've tried to stop doing on my own cars!

You could polish the faded areas and it would be a big improvement. 20 bucks for a touch up can or red is cheap for red. If you have the equipment you can get a 2 stage paint for $300_ $400. Color varies. We resprayed my sons supra and after some cut and buff shoes a head turned. The reddish color was the most expensive part 70 a quart. The clear was cheap. It may not last long but it can be resprayed in the future.
