Post your favourite modification!

So you've done something to your H2O cooled front engined wedgy. What has been your favourite mod?

Post em if you got em! Don't be bashful. For me it might be the power steering delete... or installing racing seats. Ah, lets give it to racing seats. Why? well for the same reason as the steering. I feel more connected, but also more secure.

The four rings on my dash. They are really the only mod I can SEE while driving.

You forgot, they look badass! Sparco Sprints?

I think the single upgrade that had the most effect on driving was doing my Hawk brake pads. Wow, those things bite like crazy! Very gratifying and confidence inspiring, though a bit noisy.

Koni suspension very satisfying, also square setup with r compound tires.

Race seats are on the list after engine reseal.

I’m a relatively new owner, so I don’t have a lot of mods to choose from, but of what I’ve done so far, it’s a tie between installing a Euro rear bumper and converting to manual steering. Both saved massive amounts of weight in addition to having real aesthetic (bumper) and mechanical (manual rack) advantages. The Euro bumper absolutley transformers the look of th car, and it’s really hard to appreciate it until you actually see it in person. It is also 16 pounds lighter than the US bumper, which is a great added benefit. The manual rack greatly simplifies the mechanics (no more reservoirs to fill or lines and pumps to leak), cleans up the engine bay a bit, frees up some power (the engine no longer has turn the pump), and also saves about 16 pounds. Is it hard to turn the wheel at parking lot speeds? Sure, but nothing an average man can’t handle, and at speed, the steering input and feedback is excellent. The Machine Shop (http://mwthemachineshop.com/porsche-...steering-racks) sells a manual kit with everything you need, including a brand-new, non-reman or converted rack, and it goes in without any fabrication or drama at all. The Euro bumper is another story, as Porsche has NLA’d it, but Rose Passion still has some available (or at least they did a few moths ago); the brackets and pad are, however, still available new and easy to come by from many different venders (I got mine from 944online, though they no longer have the bumper itself).

Probably the custom stainless steel exhaust I had a friend build for me. Nice to look at - but the sweet music it makes is the real treat.

Great idea for a thread!

This has been my favorite mod so far, installation of a simple, reliable, and capable power plant.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...7cbf697b64.jpg

But seriously, short of that is probably the installation my short shifter and shift linkage arm.

M4090 HiFi door cards, new speakers all around, amp, new head unit and KLA subwoofer!
Then again, this weekend will be not so much "added" as "done to" - having the paint professionally corrected
Week following are performance mod's: Vitesse MAF and lots of associated bits to go with it!

fasteddie313 02-21-2019 04:10 PM

V8 CIS-E fuel distributor and AFM and hand-made everything to make it work and tuned with MegaSquirt for complete AFR control..

350mm Momo Corsa steering wheel. Completely transforms the driving experience.

Van 02-22-2019 08:25 AM

For me it's either rebuilding the shifter with thrust bearings or replacing the cigarette lighter with a USB charging port.

RoyaleWithCheese 02-22-2019 12:46 PM

I have to mirror everyone else in going with things that directly affect the interface from driver to car. So for me it was doing the full Only944 shifter upgrade/short shift, Renown 100 steering wheel with quick disconnect, and some Sparco race seats.

My car already came with manual steering and I don't understand why power steering would be necessary in these cars. The feedback is fantastic. I did recently swap to solid bushings and the difference in cornering stability was staggering (not surprising when swapping from 30 year old rubber). So I think bushing upgrades would be another to add to the list after doing the above.

The 07k turbo swap is incoming though so we will see if that tops everything else once complete!

SamGrant951 02-22-2019 01:28 PM

968CS steering wheel.

Per vers 02-22-2019 04:12 PM

It must be the balance shaft delete. Make the motor rev faster. Make it less noisy. More simple. And gives about 5 more HP's. And best of all. It cost zero $€£

Davito 02-22-2019 04:27 PM

Intrax RSA Coilovers and high strung control arms, there is a turn on my local track I had to lift and now I take it full throttle.

As a driver, I know that I should choose one of my performance-enhancing modifications, but that 931 nose panel still puts a huge smile on my face every time I look at the car. :)

Very easy. I removed the original panel following the instructions which I am detailing as best as I can remember (I did this years ago).

Remove screws as indicated by the yellow, blue, and green arrows arrows. I think there may be some rubber flaps by the yellow arrows that have to be removed as well. There may have been screws by the pink arrows, too, but I'm not sure.

I had to trim down the metal indicated by the pink arrows to clear the vents. Be sure to paint the bare metal.

I then drilled holes on the new panel to match the mounts for the green arrows.

I put screws back (at the blue arrows) to hold the ends into place. I had to use some washers as spacers since there was a bushing or something that didn't transfer over in my case. I also put in the green arrow screws where I drilled the holes.

The yellow screws weren't reinstalled because I didn't take the time to cut those channels out and it didn't matter.

All told, there are six screws holding it together, indicated by the blue and green arrows.

I hope that helps. :)

Please be careful with this. Most of the cars I've seen with cracked fuel rails (and subsequent fires), cracked oil pickup tubes, broken power steering pump brackets, and excessive header cracks have all been engines with balance shaft deletes.

curtisr 02-23-2019 10:57 AM

Rear Euro bumper on my 924s. The front awaits painting.

Hi Van. I read about the problems. So i reinforced the oil pickup, and have no servo pump ;-)

odonnell 02-23-2019 05:22 PM

1) Megasquirt conversion

2) Dash refurb from Classic 9

3) Front and rear euro bumpers

4) Elgin camshaft + 5* advance

5) coilovers

All of them preserve the spirit of the 944 but make it better, IMHO.

On my 951... voodoo turbo, MS3Pro, built engine, ???

doolittle 02-23-2019 09:47 PM

I am going with replica Fuchs 16x7 and 16x8, with RE71-R tires, and Hawk brake pads.

I feel bad about posting a non performance modification – and, sure, removing the factory A/C, rear seats and wiper was def worth doing – but, honestly, replacing the stereo with this touchscreen Sony thing has been the best mod I've made.

Because the stuff behind the screen is only 1U high, I didn't have to cut or modify anything, and I can restore that part of the dash to original if I ever want to. Apple CarPlay Compatible. "Hey Siri, play Atomic by Blondie" = 10% speed boost ;-)

V2Rocket 02-25-2019 11:44 AM

definitely the aftermarket ECU.

screamin94Z 02-25-2019 01:25 PM

Brey-Krause lower brace.

Zirconocene 02-27-2019 10:50 AM

V2: Do you mind sharing what you went with for the aftermarket ECU? I have an S2 and there just don't seem to be too many options for it, compared to the 8V and Turbo cars. The only one I've found that seems like it would work is the Megasquirt solution, but they don't offer the Plug and Play option any more and it seems like I'd really need to dig into that particular rabbit hole. That's probably on the list for later, as I worry a lot about the old, unreplaceable electronics and want something more future proof.

V2Rocket 02-27-2019 11:19 AM

I have VEMS.
There is a plug-and-play VEMS kit for the S2, send a PM to user "Raceboy" and he'll set you up.

odonnell 02-27-2019 11:42 AM

There's a DIYPNP Megasquirt for the S2. It's a bit deceptive, as it will plug right in... after you solder every last transistor and capacitor onto the motherboard. Not quite an afternoon installation but technically it will plug right into the stock harness and start the car.

Yeah, I re-wired my cigarette port so that it would come on with ignition so I could have add a flush USB adapter that wasn't on all of the time. A hidden, but nice mod to save the battery.

Also did Conti radio install and totally reversible powered sub in the passenger foot well.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is, “VEMS?” I’ve googled it, but there were so many different things associated with that acronym.

KVDR 06-04-2019 12:26 AM

Right now, my favorite mod is VEMS because I just installed it and it's brought my car back from the dead - 951 was mostly inoperable for two years due to failing DME. It was relatively easy to install and the auto-tune feature works great!

The Speed Force Racing 321 SS header is another favorite because it's pretty and solved cracked headers.

I assume this is directed at me.

It may be slightly less, but it's at least 2.5"

I believe my friend uses Vibrant exhaust system parts. You may not be in the area, but he does great work. http://thompsonracingfabrication.com/

I don't have a picture, but a couple years ago, Tim at Speed Force made a prototype titanium cat back 951 exhaust with no muffler. It probably weighs 4 pounds or less. I have a Fabspeed front section and down pipe, so I cut the cat delete pipe and clamped in a long narrow 3 inch ID resonator. The car sounds like a Ferrari when you get on it. Idling, you don't even notice there is no muffler. The car sounds like it has a V-8, very exotic sounding and I can get fire to shoot out.

Tiger03447 06-20-2019 11:16 PM

Just don't do that fire thing in the gas station with the refueling truck present...That's slammer time..+ BIG BUCKS!

catamount 06-25-2019 04:35 PM

Tough call on favorite mod when there's been so many!

That said, the Delrin hatch pin seats might be my ear's and mental health's favorite.
The euro driving/fog lights are my night eyes favorite. (H4s are a close second there)
Koni adjustable front struts and rear coilovers along with all new suspension bushing are the tracks favorites.

Dan Shea 06-25-2019 05:22 PM

Short Shift kit < 968Cs Wheel < 3.0l Swap < MCS 2-Way remote

Honestly I was amazed at how much it changed the cars characteristics going from a 'double adjustable' coil over (that adjusts rebound and compression at the same time) to the remote independently adjustable mcs. With the old setup I had to have the rebound set so high to avoid 'floating' it would take the compression to back breaking levels on the street. Big bumps would knock the car offline and remove your fillings. Bumps in the middle of a corner were white knuckle.. Now the suspension eats bumps spits them out, and I don't even know I hit something.
