Default Dash Lights

Recently picked up an 88 ..... nice clean straight car low miles. Drove it in the dark last night, the dash lights are pretty much gone. I tried the search but cannot come up with any threads on how to change the bulbs for the speedo tech etc etc.

I come from the air cooled 911 world where you simply pull the individual gauge out and replace the bulbs.

Thanks for the help.

your problem may well be the reflectors instead of the bulbs. I cleaned mine up and used reflective tape on them and used slightly higher wattage bulbs. looks perfect now.

Lot's of good info on Clark's Garage on this subject.

Unless you have an aftermarket wheel like the one in the article, you'll have to pull your airbag. I have pulled the cluster with the wheel in place, but it's not particularly fun. Especially if the connectors have been in place for a long time.

Some people take this opportunity to upgrade to LEDs as well. Something to think about if your looking for performance over originality.

Which LED's do you recommend? And not to hijack this thread, but what if you have no power to these bulbs. I have my cluster apart making repairs and when testing the lights......no power in either headlight switch position. Any suggestions? Cleaning grounds is my next thing to do........

Are they just dim, or completely dark? Did you check your fuses? Is your license plate light working? They’re on the same circuit... I ran into an issue with a loose license plate light lead connection shorting to ground and taking out the dash lights as well.

headlights and dash lights are completely dead. No power to the headlight fuses either. I've cleaned dash grounds and driver front ground my battery to bellhousing ground wire is in bad shape so I'm ordering new wire now to replace and clean that connection. I'm also going to add a new ground from the front to engine when wire gets here. Didn't know about the license plate correlation....I will go check that now.

reinstalling my turn signal assembly fixed my headlights....they are working again. License plate bulbs are toast, but have power. Dash lights still don't work, now I'm wondering if I have a bad dimmer switch.......

Definitely look into the reflectors on the bottom of the gauge cluster. And while you have the cluster pulled it’s probably worth doing the odometer gear as well. Good luck!

Yes......I have been refurbishing the whole cluster. Fresh paint, gear and reflecters redone with aluminum tape.

Here's a link to a great thread on LED dashlight conversion. It helped me a great deal when I converted my dash.
