Default s2 drivetrain in a 1984 944

Hello, I have a 1984 Porsche 944 that I am installing a 1990 s2 engine and gearbox. I am also changing the suspension and breaks for the newer et with a mix of parts from turbo and S2. My only problem is what to do with the speedometer? I will use the old type speedometer and dashboard that uses cable to the front wheel. Does anybody have a sollution to this?:-)

I'm not sure what the latest developments to this problem is but I have seen in older threads people choose to use a GPS speedometer.

You speedometer will still work OK with the original instrument panel since the '84 model uses the left front wheel to drive the speedometer/odometer by cable. You won't have to do anything to make the speedo work.

Not sure if the DME cares about transmission speed sender, pretty sure it doesn't matter.

He's swapping the front suspension too, so he won't have the drive from the left hub.
They make a box for muscle cars with modern drivetrains, it takes a signal from the bcm and drives a cable driven speedometer, I wonder if one of those could be adapted to take the signal from the S2 transaxle.

Alternatively you cold have the spindle drilled and reamed for the speedometer cable. Beyond this, its a GPS unit. Speedhut has a couple of solutions that can meet your needs for a close to an OEM look.

Got it, missed the suspension change out.

Reasonable GPS speedo's:

85 mm $65.60

52mm, $49.99

Or pricey ($345.00) but cool SpeedHut SPEEDBOX electrical (or GPS) to mechanical adapter:

or Dakota Digital:

You may need to have a custom spedometer cable made up..

I have the exact setup you're talking about, 84 944 with 90 S2 suspension and transaxle. Easily done, but do everything. Remember you'll end up with a "late model" offset, so the Wheels will change too. Also, you'll be going from steel rear arms (banana) to the later aluminum, so the rear axles change too. Speedo is easy as well, I spent the money at SpeedHut and bought a 4inch / 100mm GPS unit that looks very similar to the Porsche one. Works awesome, and not too much money.
My setup has 4 more cylinders than the S2 engine you're swapping, but you'll have an incredible car when your done!

Enjoy,
Gord.
