Default HELP! Power Steering Issue (Video Inside)

I apologize in advance if this is a common issue, however, I wanted to get this thread out sooner than later as this is an emergency.

I'd like to avoid taking it to a shop (a recent shop visit cost me $2200), hoping there is a trouble shoot or DIY pertaining to what I'm experiencing...

I started the car (cold start and ~30°F outside) and noticed an odd sound. I allowed the car to idle, yet, the sound was still there but got significantly worse after I started to move the steering wheel. I decided to pop the hood and unhappily saw this...

Recent changes to the car:
  • New brake booster
  • New brake master cylinder
  • Rennbay Intermediate shaft
  • Motor mounts
Is this a major issue?

Is it possible that you reversed the feed and pressure lines from the power steering pump?

In the video, is the engine still idling? It's either super smooth or it's not running. This means you've got this pressure at rest. Oh my

You can get foaming if the pump needs a Rennbay rebuild kit.

@DSMblue @Dan Martinic @Jfrahm Thanks for the quick replies!

I ended up taking it to a shop...

The power steering pump is shot...

The shop also suggested I replace all the hoses/lines.

If that is their suggestion, it makes sense if you don't know last time lines were refreshed. May want to add a new reservoir on while you're in that repair mode.

Sounds like a lot of money! The Rennbay kit is under $30, easy to install. It cured the same problem in my blue 928S4 (same pump). The upper lines are not expensive either. The big high-pressure lines probably cost a lot but maybe they are not suggesting those get replaced. You might want to check the scope of work.

Let us know how much all this costs, that is always interesting. It'd be about $100 and an afternoon DIY.
