My Alpine White 1986 Porsche 944 - Project
 

Morning everyone.

On a whim I purchased my first Porsche -1986 Alpine White 944 NA from the original owner. Condition is really solid and a lot of the maintenance must-do's were taken care of prior to purchase (timing belt/clutch/water pump/alternator)
It says 93k but the mileage & trip odometer recently stopped so it might have a little more and I'll need to get new gears. Aside from that, the interior is almost flawless; no dash cracks, no stains, no seat rips - It's actually quite wild ha. The exterior looks pristine from 15 feet away, up close it has its expected blemishes. The owner of the car was an older women who bought it new, she recently passed away and her nephew was the one who sold it to me after making the repairs. This will be my "DD" although it'll only be driven 2-3 times a week. I live in center city Philly and will be forced to street park it for now :(

I already have a decent size list of things to do that aren't dire but need to be fixed/replaced eventually.
So far I've changed the oil and filter, drained trans fluid, plugged a small exhaust leak, replaced hood and trunk struts, and replaced the headlights to LED.

We have sister sportscars; what does your build code tag ( in the hatch area by the rear tail light or in the Warranty book ) show for options ?
What do you have for history on it's prior ownership ? It appears she took really good care of it. Did you also get the tool roll, sunroof bag, tire compressor, and Owner's books ? If not, these may be hard to source and going back to the seller now for another 'look around' may be worth it. Especially for the books in their holder.

Best wishes with your new found love .... ( but try and find a safe place off the street undercover to garage it ). And make sure your fuel lines near the top and side of the engine are dry, crack free, and recently replaced. These cars have been known to burn from spraying fuel on the manifold.

Good advise for sure. Also leave your contact info with the seller in case something else related to the car turns up. I touched base with my PO about a year after my purchase to just say hello and say if anything related to car should turn up to please let me know. A month or so later he called to say he found the dealer's window sticker :) Much better than a new Porsche issued COA.

Coat that dash with Aerospace 303, then cover that dash up with something while it is parked then get a windshield and window covers to block the UV light from the windows, stat!

Also, consider painting 1" or so of the rear glass hatch around the frame - supposedly, it helps the UV from destroying the glue and causing the glass to delaminate from the frame.

That looks pretty schweet!

I'm still watching, but not buying. Still house finishing... Most of what I see looks pretty beat--yours looks great by comparison.

Here is the build code tag for ya. I wasn't able to get any of the added extras. I need to look under the trunk carpet still and see if anything is hidden there. I plan on moving June and a driveway/garage/private parking is a must. I cant stand to see another car parked too close to me!

I'm in Fishtown now. Parking isnt great and I cant stand leaving my car in a place I dont walk by each day. Addressing that soon when i move hopefully. I've owned 3 cars in my lifetime, all were white with black leather interior lol.

I will for sure get 303 here soon. I treated my interior already but will double down on that for safety. I almost want to cover my car every day since I live in the city with bad parkers, gravel/rocks and itll save it from the sun.

You have some good options there.....

The M404 brings it up a notch from the standard, base 944 in sway bars.
And 018 is good.

If one looks at a lot of 944s, one will be surprised to see a good share of them will only have one, two, or three options listed on this tag. You have nearly two lines.

I love the Alpine White ones. I like the black interior better than red too. Some of the white 944's I have found have the red interior — would love to find one like yours.

yea idk what the previous owner did but its annoying. It doesn't have enough slack so it also keeps popping out the plastic surround when i shift.

I've owned the car for over a month now and have had zero issues. It's been a blast to drive and only have positive things to say about it. I have a faint smell of burning that I can only assume is from oil? (I have a small leak) but feel like I should check it out to be safe.

I've been acquiring parts as I don't own a garage and its very cold this time a year, but I'll have access to a friends garage in a matter of weeks which will be my first opportunity to get some things done. First major task is all new front/rear suspension. I plan to lower the car 1.5 inches and add spacers for the front and rear. As for the exterior I've purchased a rear turbo valance that just needs some paint and rear windshield wiper delete.

Today I took out my gauge cluster as my odometer has been broken since purchase and my lights were very dim. Sure enough the gear was a mess, and an old sticker had fallen in front of my mileage so I couldn't tell it was stuck until a few days into ownership. Lastly, my check engine light didn't have a bulb installed. I was a bit worried maybe the previous owner took it out on purpose to hide something? If not, I'm not sure why it wasn't there... After reinstalling everything the light doesn't come on but I've yet to drive it. Fingers crossed no new issues decide to pop up now :crying:
