James G. 968 build thread. Starting off a bit surprising.

I've been tinkering and it's about to start in earnest. The car is a 1992 968. It's got an LS2 and a 5 speed out of a Turbo S, not my work. The plan, if such a thing exists, is to do something unique. It may see the track but it won't be a track car exclusively. I'm shooting for something on the wild side and I'm not making any attempt at keeping a purist happy. For example, this car will be debadged.
I'm hoping to avoid using fiberglass flares but the wheels and tires are more prominent than expected. 18x11s in front, 18x12s in back. F 295/30, R 315/30s. I had intended to cut the fenders and quarters and flare them, that's looking difficult in front.
Brakes will be entirely too big.
interior will be minimal, I've already created RS style door cards in carbon fiber.

Anyone know why I can't seem to upload photos?

Text for images is (img)image_url(/img). Replace the parentheses with brackets. Or you can upload from a harddrive.

Cool project. Exhaust sounds good. 993 headlights are nice. Looks like something weird's going on with the brake booster though.

I don't think an 11" wheel will fit up front. It will either rub the strut or stick out past the fender. Somethings gotta give!

In one of your other posts I think you mentioned a 380mm front rotor. I don't think that will fit under an 18" wheel unless you have a low-profile motorsport caliper. IIRC, the current GT3 has a 380mm rotor and the 19s barely clear.

Cool project. I feel like I've seen the images before, maybe on Pelican? Exhaust sounds good. 993 headlights are nice. Looks like something weird's going on with the brake booster though.

I've had pics here, I can't seem to upload at the moment. The wheels are by Apex and apparently clear 380mm brakes. The car has 993TT rotors on it now, there is 44mm of space between the caliper and the wheel.
Oh, the tires stick out past the fenders all right. Way past.

I can upload pics in a reply but not as a stand alone post. Strange.

Here's a decent picture of the wheel that shows how much area is between the caliper and the inner wheel surface.

Sub'd, I really like the fixed headlights and black hood!

James G. 12-16-2018 03:58 PM

Beyond the point of no return now.

This morning's work. Not going badly considering I'm in no way qualified to do this. That's an 11" wide wheel with a 295/30/18 under there.

LOL, brave man.

Is this your final width increase or just still test looking...?

I am doing similar but my fronts are fiberglass, second thoughts, maybe metal is easier....:biggulp:

Wide Body

James G
This is very similar to how I did my 1989 944 Turbo bodied 500HP LS3.

This should be wide enough. The fenders have not been rolled and there is a 1/4" spacer back there.

Widened vs original.

I have a plan but not experience to back it up. I've spent more time staring and head scratching than working but it's coming along fine. Here's the right vs left. The welding part that's next is the only part of this I am comfortable with.

One down.

Drivers fender is all metal and one piece again. This isn't a fast or fun process. Welding 22ga sheetmetal is harder than expected. There is a 7 mm spacer behind the wheel. I still have to solve the bottom of the bumper cover.

don't the headlights aim too far up??

They are 993 headlights (or the 993 style at least) with projector lenses that shine forward, not up.

no
no
no....
the main issue with the 993 headlight conversion, is that they are not at the same angle as the 993 and thus POINT TOO FAR UP.

They sure do. I need to fix it, not sure how I'm going to yet.

You have the welding skills, so what do you think about adding metal to the factory headlight opening of the 968 fender to position the 993 headlight properly?

Nice work by the way.

Very cool work. I love that type of wide body where you hack up the fender and basically stretch he stock body lines.

James G. 02-26-2019 10:22 PM

One step forward...

I wasn't happy with the driver's side. I did it over differently. I went with a completely different method on the pass side. It was never going to be a show car. Thankfully you can't see both sides at the same time. It looks bad on the driver's side but there will only be a 1/16" of filler. I'm really happy with how the passenger side is coming out. The car looks wild with 295/30s/18s on the front.

Passenger side was both easier and had a better result. They'll match more or less and look the same when done but the passenger side will require less effort.

Very cool. Should look amazing when they're all smoothed out. I'll never do anything like this to my 951, but my 914 will get welded on GT flares, so I will have my own welding adventures coming up. Keep the updates coming!

Kiltacular Jim 03-01-2019 12:23 AM

I love to see your lines of effort, this is a super project

James G. 03-23-2019 02:08 AM

It's coming along. The rear is more difficult than the front with the inner structure. It'll be roughly 3 inches wider.

James G. 01-22-2020 11:09 PM

It's certainly a slower process than expected

I'm getting there. The bumper covers are just slapped on to see if I'm in trouble. Nothing that can't be adjusted. So here it is, a 968 with 11s front, 12s rear. 295/315 under steel. I don't know how wide a stock 968 is but this is 72".

What is the White Chassis in the background..?

968to986 01-23-2020 08:54 AM

Looking awesome! Reminds me a bit of a 928 GTS. MK2 Golf in the background? I miss my early GTIs and Sciroccos.

James G. 01-23-2020 11:02 AM

There's 2 cars in the back. A MK golf GTI that's getting a brand new 3.6l VR6 and Berg Cup flares. That's a friends, he brings over his winter projects, we both get more done if not solo. Then there's a Datsun Z. When I'm done with this phase of the 968 that's getting everything. It's currently a triple webber 2.8l. I have a complete stand alone RB swap for it. Ever wonder what a golf would look like with giant tires?

The VW friend is crazy for them. He's got an originally built by Reeves Calloway Scirocco stage 2 turbo. Apparently there are not many of those. He's also got a 50k mile GTI 337 that he bought new in 2001/2.

With all the amazing fender work and headlight coolness going on please delete those silly headlight washers in the bumper cover... the dumbest accessory I have ever seen on nice looking 968's. With your panel skills that should take all of 30 minutes.....
and the Miller welder wont even be required !

All of the supporting parts have been thrown out. Those will go also.

James G. 02-24-2020 12:09 AM

Metal work done.

Major progress. 95% of the filler is done. I needed to spray a quick coat of epoxy primer so I could have a consistent base for the last bit. There's a few low spots that are fighting me. Last bit of filler, block sand, polyester primer/filler spray, final block sand and we'll get to paint.

Great work! Let’s find a carbon fiber shop that can replicate those front fenders, that will accept properly fitted 993 headlamps.

If I had these fronts to do again they'd be less wide. Though the front and rear are the same width from some angles the front look too wide. They could be 1" less and fit 10" wheels and 285/30/18s which might be a better option.

James G. 03-01-2020 10:34 PM

Will I be removing the headlight washers in the bumper? Lol, I'm removing ALL the washers. Once you commit to welding these decisions are easier. Getting these filled in like they were never there is probably the same amount of hassle as prepping and painting the holes. If your filling holes in sheet metal these magnets are great. Incredibly strong. If they were 1/2" tall they'd be tough to pull off.
