How to identify 944 Tranny
Assuming I don't trust the option code, what is the best way to identify a 944 transmission if it's still in the car? I recall the number being stamped on the top of the transmission. Can it be seen with a mirror and flashlight?
Thanks.
Thanks.

look for the adam's apple
had to be done.
yes a mirror and flashlight will do it. in some tool stores you can find a small mirror on the end of a telescoping stick, those are very helpful...

You may need to scrub oxidation and other crud off the stamp to read it properly, even with the transmission on the bench. I use a steel "toothbrush" as can be found in hardware stores' furniture refinishing supplies.
But the code you read from the transmission isn't definitive: parts and versions can be removed and installed, and frequently are over the years.

Letters are important, numbers are just date of production.

You can always spin the wheels and see if it has LSD , it's a first indication.Like the boys mention , it's possible to see the code if you clean the top
