944 5 speed selector problem
hi guys
I have recently acquired a 944 manual trans. there is an incredible amount of "slop" in the gear lever. I've searched and searched but can't find an answer.
I have done all the checks and repairs I can. New selector lever and ball at front (cabin) end. No Play at all in fittings.
A new rear linkage fitted as well.
however on the reinstall of all parts I have so much free play it is almost impossible to select 5th gear. 1st and 2nd are ok, but in the 3rd /4th plain I have so much free play the lever will hit both sides of the floor
Can any one suggest where I might have gone wrong.
any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

Did you check the hole in the shift rod before installing your new shifter? The shift rod's hole and the shifter stud both wear. Unless you replace the rod or install a bushing in it slop will remain. There are threads and write ups on 944onlne about the repair. I know because I did one Easy fix.

the black rod from lever to transaxle is likely worn and needs to be drilled straight with an upsized lever pivot (or bushing inserted)
