Helo me diagnose this clicking sound (pretty please!)
Hi guys,
My trust turbo has been in the garage for the better part of the year. Although I've been driving it around for 10 minutes every two weeks I keep on having problems appear (no surprise there). The latest one is this really loud clicking noise from the engine. I'd really like some insight into what's going on... (I've got my amateurish thoughts but won't spoil it by sharing yet!).
I took a short vid showing the noise when idle and then when revving a bit:
All thoughts most welcome!
PS - checked oil, all good...
Cheers

Yup. Lifter.Change the oil and filter and use a thinner weight. If that doesn't quiet it down you'll have to replace it. There may be more to it like a worn cam, etc. also. Isolate the lifter before you remove the cam tower (if you must remove it). And let your car warm up and treat her like a lady! An old lady

Lifter, indeed.
My 951 has unfortunately sat for extended periods of time numerous times, and I hear the same noise for a bit after it’s eventually restarted (tonight included).
Mine has always quoted down on it’s own after a ride or two (tonight included).

Hey guys, thanks so much for the info. Good to hear 4 out of 4 consistent diagnoses...
One extra bit of info: I very recently changed the oil (like , 2 months and 5km ago). I did change the viscosity though. I used to use 10w50 mobile 1 motorsport which is not discontinued so I went for their suggested replacement of 15w60 extended life.
Could that possibly be the trigger here? And if so, would changing to some other 10w50 be worth a try?
Irrespective of this, I've been reading around as to whether its OK to drive in this state but can't really conclude. What do you think?
Its worth saying the car is in absolutely excellent condition (bar the last year's garage stay). I even used to go crazy at track days every now and then with no issue whatsoever.
Cheers!

Thick goo that 60wt. Come down to a 20w50 or a 10w/40 (depending on where you live). Not a diagnosis, just a suggestion to help you out. It's the cheap way to quiet engine. If the noise is still there pull the cam tower and change the bad lifter.

It's a Snake Oil remedy but try adding can of Marvel Mystery Oil. Old standby in the aviation industry for stuck valves and such. Stuff is a good varnish solvent and it doesn't take much to gum up a lifter. YMMV

It saved me last year. No guarantees, but worth the try. It doesn't cost much.

Oh, one more thing! Any opinion on whether its OK to drive (or even start)... I mean, is there damage being caused right now? I'd like to continue starting it every now and then and running it round the block a few times ... unless this is causing damage of course! Thanks!

If you decide to take the cam tower apart to get at the lifters you can attempt to manually prime them. Either by 1) Placing the lifter in a oil bath in a glass mason jar with metal lid/band. Then attaching a vacuum pump and that will draw the oil thru the orifice in the side or 2) Using a syringe (generally with a plastic tip) force oil into said side inlet hole.
