Default Embarassingly basic suspension rebuild question

I'd like to restore my 1991 944S2 suspension to as near "new" as possible. Elephant Racing offers a "Stock Restoration Package" for $3,126.00 that seems to include everything needed. Out of the $3,126.00, their recommended struts are $1,900 of the total (the brand is not listed, at least not what I can find). Are there cheaper recommended alternative struts and/or coilovers that will still give me decent street performance?

$1900... is the whole strut replaced?

I believe you can get insert for that. Koni cost less than $150-$200 per side.

Oh boy ... there's all kinds of suspension packages available , KONI Ground Control packages are pretty popular.
Although i can vouch for Chuck at Elephant Racing as most of the suspension bits for my 89 911 come from Elephant and Tarett and their
products are top of the line !
ER deals mainly with Bilstein and their higher end "VON" shocks , but if the quote he gave you for your suspension includes the correct valving for your
application, then the price is about right.
Performance coilovers are not cheap by any means !

I think so, I'm just going by what is on the website, have not spoken to anyone there at ER. Still, I am considering ordering everything in the package except deleting the $1900 strut set, and looking for an in-between alternative for the struts.

How does Koni sport struts with Koni inserts sound? Seem to be on-line in several places for around $600-$700 struts and inserts together.

ok...next dumb question, I have a basic understanding of what valving is, but what is the advantage of a high-end strut/insert with 944-specific valving as opposed to a lower priced but still decent quality more generic alternative? Am I likely to see a difference for street driving?

If you are looking to simply refresh the stock suspension, I would recommend calling Jason at Paragon Products. He can walk you through the options. I know that ER produces some stock replacement items, but my understanding is that most of their products are focused on racing (poly bushings, etc.) and IMO not appropriate for restoration of a street car.

+1000000

Call Paragon Products.

New Yellow Konis on rear @$150each
R&R fronts and have Jason get fronts rebuilt if they are Koni.
Look for two front Yellow cores to have those rebuild and exchanged for your stock front if not already Koni. $350-400 each best of my recollection.
So for $1000-$1100, you are on brand new Koni sports on all 4 corners.

Koni Sport all around is good, firm for sporty street driving and will replicate factory feel/intent.

He should be able to hook you up with weather sealed sphericals or stock replacement rubber bushings of you are going that deep.

You probably won't find much that's really that worn out, maybe do the 968 rear caster block and all the sway bar bushings, power steering rack mount bushings and the car will handle like new.

Yep, thanks. I really would like to go "that deep" so will be looking to get all the bushings, etc. Looks like I'll be calling Jason and most likely going with the Konis

I have for sale used front KONI double adjustable front shock struts in very good condition. The strut mounting bracket is from a 951 with the spindle attachment flanges set for early Porsche 944, for late Porscke 944, a 1 mm shim on each side of spindle mounting flange is needed and the bolt hole circle distance is easily modified for the late spindles. The lower spring perch is ride height adjustable. Koni did the double adjustable conversion.

The shocks have had less than 20 track days. The conversion cost was $1700. Selling for $850 plus shipping. PM if interested. Can have photos in a day?

Ditto. Jason and his crew took me through a few suspension rebuilds. Koni inserts are a step better than Sachs. Great for an occasional autox or DE, and just nicer for the street.

Are you looking for a more performance oriented setup, or are you going towards a track setup?

Referring to my thread of used Koni front shock struts for sales, I consulted with Jason at Paragon to build these struts from Koni. Koni converted my supplied 951 struts to adjustable height lower spring perches and then inserted racing double adjustable Koni shocks, compression and rebound. These shocks are LEVEL 3 design, the best Koni shock combination for a Porsche 944. I also have 400 lb/in front coil over springs for sale. This is the best bang for the buck at $850 plus shipping. Jason knows me.
